THEATER: A new multimedia opera called Violet Fire centers on legendary inventor Nikola Tesla, who not only claimed over 700 patents but also inspired basically the most wicked band ever. Part of the BAM Next Wave Festival, the show conceptualizes the inner life of the man whose famous “waking hallucinations” led to great breakthroughs in electricity (alternating current, hydroelectric power), wireless broadcasting (radio transmission), robotics (remote control), and mind-blowing guitar riffs. (Ends Saturday!) - John......

Seattle's KEXP, our favorite station to stream all day, is coming back to NYC. Last time the morning deejay John Richards was in town we interviewed him at an hour in the morning we had never seen before. The best thing about these visits is that the station sets up some in-studio shows while they're here. This time around you can go see, for free: Ivy, The Information, Mike Doughty, Joy Zipper, Phoenix, Dogs Die......

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Knitting Factory last night to help us celebrate our 2nd birthday. The music was amazing (and the cupcakes were good too). Speaking of music, thanks to Coolfer and Stereogum for deejaying and The Cloud Room, Other Passengers, The Information and Elkland for playing. We hadn't seen Other Passengers live before and they totally blew us away, we even forgot to take pictures during their set, THAT is......

With a chaotic mixture of synth and guitar rock The Information's songs could easily soundtrack most of our frezied, fast-paced lifestyles. Insomnia induced, regret filled, real life fueled sounds become music to our sympathetic ears. This band brings back intelligence to song writing, with lyrics that any phrenic hedonist can relate to. A picture of life and love falling apart and getting pieced back together is painted in often defensive and angry tones. Love......

Hey, shorty, it's our birthday (shorty)! Gothamist is very happy that we're at this tremendous milestone, the Terrible Twos, and want to thank all of you for your support and encouragement. We didn't know what we were getting ourselves into on that fateful day(s - we had a beta period), and we're glad, because it's been an incomparable two years. For starters, Gothamist is just getting comfortable in talking English better - maybe someday......

There are some great shows coming up that will get you from Valentine's Day to St. Patricks Day, but you're going to want to buy tickets SOON, before they sell out. Gothamist is particularly looking forward to the Thermals [pictured, reading Nabokov - hott!] @ Knitting Factory, as well as our own Movable Hype 2 at the same venue. And if you don't know who the Kaiser Chiefs are, you will, so just buy tickets......

Last night was our Movable Hype 1.5 show at Pianos. Thanks to the bands and everyone who came out! We all had a lot of fun despite Pianos double booking problems, but hey, that stuff happens. Luckily, we already have Movable Hype 2.0 all set up and it's back at the Knitting Factory. We're really excited about the lineup which is as follows: Elkland, The Information, Other Passengers and The Cloud Room. Deejay to be......
