A thief in Forest Hills has been using a bike as his getaway vehicle, and the NYPD has had it up to here with his shenanigans. Which is sad because, as we know, the NYPD has always had such a great relationship with the city's bikers.
NYPD On The Lookout For Bike Bandit
Couple on Vespa Chase Down Crook
A Carroll Gardens woman said a couple on a motorized scooter saved her cell phone from the hands of a thief last week. The victim said she was walking her dog while talking on her cell phone on the evening of August 10th. As she bent to pick up her dog's "business," a 13-year-old and his accomplice rushed up and snatched the phone from her hand. But like lightning, a couple on a Vespa swooped in and chased the kids to Union Street, where the woman jumped off, grabbed the phone, and jumped back on to ride away. Cops arrested the teen and the phone was returned. All in a day's work for the Brooklyn Vespers!
Nine-Year-Old Shot Over Stolen Bike
A 9-year-old boy in Brooklyn may have a bullet permanently lodged in his arm after being shot by a teenage bike thief. Ronnell Gurley discovered that his uncle's silver BMX bike had been stolen on Thursday afternoon (his cousins had allegedly taken it out, and it was stolen from outside of a convenience store in Brownsville), and he and his uncle set out to find the thieves. A few hours later they found the teens and demanded they returned the bike. According to Ronnell, one teen claimed he "runs this block," and pulled out a gun.
Brooklyn Man Loses Tires, Finds Them on Craigslist
Craigslist giveth and Craigslist taketh away—last week a thief experienced both when he tried to pass off stolen tires via the web classifieds, and ended up delivering them back to the their former owner. On February 3rd the victim told cops that someone had taken the rims and tires from his 2008 Infiniti, which he'd parked on East 71st Street in Manhattan. The next day he logged onto the web classifieds to find a new set, reports the Post, and found a listing for his own stolen property, being sold by one Joel Walton. The victim, a Brooklyn resident, arranged to meet Walton in East New York and called the police for back-up. Cops cuffed the 21-year-old suspect and took him into custody. Now he'll need a lawyer, but luckily Craigslist has that covered, too.
1,400 Columbia University Social Security Numbers Leaked
News has gotten out that three laptops which contained social security numbers of 1,400 students, alum, and prospies were stolen from a Columbia University office last week. It turns out this isn't the first time the school has massively and mistakenly divulged the sensitive information of its affiliates—back in 2007 Columbia leaked over 5,000 names and social security numbers via a Google Doc! “I’m not terribly surprised, given that it’s happened before, but at the same time, I can’t believe they let it happen again,” wrote one undergrad in an email to Bwog.
