The Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is the quintessential tale of love lost, nearly regained and then agonizingly lost again. When Eurydice dies on their wedding day, her musician lover Orpheus, "father of song", journeys down to Hades to rescue her. The man shreds so hard on the lyre they let him escort Eurydice back to the land of the living, with the caveat that she walk behind him the whole way – if he so much as sneaks a peek at his beloved before they reach terra firma, she'll be lost forever. Of course all this happened way before D.A. Pennebaker's documentary Don't Look Back was released; had Orpheus been familiar with that particular title mankind might have been denied one of the most heartbreaking love stories ever conceived, not to mention a moment of 'D'oh!' unrivaled by Homer himself.

Last night we headed to one of our favorite local bars, Lolita, for a Sunday night, post-CMJ, drink. The bar rotates artwork every month or so and right now it's all New York themed pieces. The Greek coffee cup, the parking ticket, the Metrocard, the subway sign...you get the idea. For some reason, they are all painted on canvas that is meant to resemble a refrigerator door. Example at right.

Tuesday's grey, and Wednesday too. Thursday it will rain upon you. Friday, I'm in love. Saturday wait. Sunday is looking great.

It's somewhat strange that an Olympic event would take place before the opening ceremonies of the games, but that's just what happened yesterday. The United States defeated Greece, the host country, in women's soccer, 3-0. Wednesday was the first day of Olympic action and women's soccer is the only event before the opening ceremonies.

Sunday, scores of Americans were celebrating Independence Day, but Greeks we all watching the European Championships finals. Greece was a 100-1 long-shot to win the tournament, but pulled off a miracle. They defeated heavily favored, and host country, Portugal, 1-0. Greece was at 100-1 for good reason. Entering the tournament, they had never won a game in major competitions.
