Update: The Gothamist Newsmap has identified the two people struck by a train at Hoyt-Schermerhorn station as transit workers. The commenter below points out that it looks like at least one death at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station with someone trapped between the platform and a train. A transit worker was killed earlier this week at the Columbus Circle station.

Fro-Yo Challenge
Apparently New York is slowly but surely being taken over by frozen yogurt establishments. Both the traditional press and food bloggers have spoken volumes about Pinkberry, a West-coast chain known affectionately as "Crackberry" for its addictive qualities. Since we first reported on it in October, there have been articles in the New York Sun, the New York Times, and posts from Restaurant Girl and Off the Broiler. But a challenger to Pinkberry arrived recently -- Yolato, where, according to today's NYT dining section "the creaminess of gelato meets frozen yogurt’s refreshing tang." Yolato's first location opened in January, and its second opened today, and the Pinkberry empire has plans to open two more Manhattan locations.
CMJ is over! Thank you!
A gazillion thanks to everyone who came out to support all the excellent bands who played The Gothamist House at The White Rabbit this weekend! We had a total blast putting it all together and watching it all play out more perfectly than we could have ever imagined. Our highlights of the three days are too many to mention right here, but the number of bands saying things like "We've never done anything like this" or "We'll probably never play this song like this again" really put a stamp on how special the event turned out to be. A huge thanks is due to all 24 of the bands that performed, as well as to the staff of the White Rabbit, who put in a ton of work to make the whole thing go off as smooth as we could have ever hoped for. If you were able to make it out, please feel free to share some of your highlights from the three days in the comments.
The Gothamist House Kicks off today!
After months of preparation, the first day of The Gothamist House at The White Rabbit is finally here! Surely you know the drill by now...Great bands, cheap drinks, thanks to the White Rabbit extending their Happy Hour throughout the day, and completely, no strings attached free to attend. So swing by the spot at 145 East Houston (Between Eldridge and Forsyth) and come say hi!
CMJ Starts today!
Today is officially the first day of CMJ! Starting this afternoon and going strong through the weekend, every music club in the city is going to be jam packed with hours upon hours of the hottest up and coming bands from all over the world. Seeing that we'd expect your regular Gothamist reader won't be equipped with a $500 badge, we decided to highlight some of the standout free events this week. While you will still be able to get into nearly all the night showcases by paying at the door, many of these bands will be playing for free anyway while they're in town.
Best Hatemail, Ever!
The Gothamist mailbag is always an amusing read. Most of the emails are friendly tips, but once in awhile we do get some hate-mail. Remember that silly Opinionist piece we wrote last month about abortion? That one has definitely generated its fair share of negative comment. Take for instance this one, received with the subject line "Jerk!" this morning:
The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Picks: Winter Blahs Edition
With the vice president shooting people in the face and everyone still getting over their chocolate hang over from Valentine's Day, this week it's hard not to feel a general malaise and slight discomfort about the new releases line up. However as always, New York's repertory film scene comes through in the clinch keeping Gothamist inspired when it comes to movie viewing.
The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Picks: Don't Answer That Phone Edition
With the Oscar nominations announced this week, you can expect much of the box office traffic to be people trying to cross films off of their list that they are just now realizing are "important." However, the new releases keep a coming and the New York repertory houses are programming away, so there's loads of good flicks to check out this weekend.
The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Picks, Sir Yes Sir Edition
Baby, it's cold outside. Though Gothamist thinks it's always a good time to go to the movies, this time of year is particularly perfect for cozying up at the cineplex. Hot cocoa goes great with popcorn.
Map of the Week: Pshark Property Age Map
The Gothamist award for map of the week (we just invented that!) goes to the amazing Pshark Map, which in addition to the property age can show all sorts of other real estate info, including landmark and redevelopment zones. Runner-up shoutout this week goes to the Alkemis Multimap Mashup (shows traffic, movies, and a bunch of other details). And while we're throwing around map-links, check out Wayfaring and YourGMap-- two services that let you make your own maps. 2003 Blackout, the Anniversary
Two years ago today the lights went out all over New York and what really impressed Gothamist was that, in one of those great moments of urban solidarity, nothing bad really happened (unlike, say, the blackout of '77). What's important to remember though, besides how well everyone did last time, is how easily another blackout could happen today. Especially after yesterday's record breaking heat, 99° in Central Park!
Gothamist Survival Kit
There are some days when you come home from work and really want a drink, and then there are those days when you need one. For Gothamist, this week was the latter. We’re not sure if it was the lost Fed-Ex package, the jammed copier or the infamous blue screen of death (oh PC we hate you) that pushed us over the edge – but we knew it was time to bust out the Gothamist Survival Kit.
Interactive Art in NYC
Interactive Art is not usually Gothamist's bag, man. All those freaknick young artists tend to seem like extras from Tron or Blade Runner, outfitted by Jean-Paul Gaultier. Still, we don't turn down free beer, so last night we dragged ourselves out of Gothamist HQ and visited two interactive art shows. The first was the Parsons 2004 Design and Technology MFA show. Tip to next year's organizers: interactive art is best displayed in large, empty rooms. Trying to shove 50 or 60 interactive art exhibits together, all beeping and malfunctioning, is just not a good idea. There was lots of typical pretentious artist fluff, and one or two genuine good ideas. The Gothamist prize for most devious project must go to Josh Kinberg and his Bikes Against Bush project [video, project overview]. Basically, he cross-bred a bike, a computer, and six cans of referee line chalk to make an automatic, mobile-web enabled graffiti machine. He's planning on releasing it just in time to disrupt the Republican Convention. Now that's education!
What's In A Name?
In this week's media recap we turn to TV, or more specifically the nomenclature behind the local weather programming. The Gothamist appreciates the effort these stations put into marketing their specific weather segments. Allow us to take you though a few.
Rain, Rain Go Away
The Gothamist will not feel sorry for ourselves just because it's raining... again.
A Note From the Editor & Publisher
Today we'd like to announce the addition of Tien Mao, known for his little read book, to our growing Gothamist family. Tien, a lifelong New Yorker, will be covering the sports beat, just in time to ring in the March Madness, the new baseball season, and Gothamist's first Little League season. So, welcome Tien.
Letter from the Publisher
Today we are launching the beta version of The Gothamist Forum, a bulletin board for the site. If the forum catches on, it will become a permanent feature of the site- until then, you can find a link to it in the center column, right under the interview box. Register for the forum today! What should the forum be used for? Posting comments unrelated to the main posts on Gothamist or the Gothamist Interview, and posting stories or announcements or events. If you feel like being a moderator on the board, or being one of the anchor posters on the board, please email Jake and he'll get you set up right.

Excellent news: The Gothamist T-shirt will be on sale from Tiny Factory, whose site is finally up. The shirts are heathered red with maroon trim (around the neck for the men's version; around the neck and arms for the women's), with a handscreened Gothamist logo on the chest. The shirt, made of 100% cotton from American Apparel, is $20 including shipping and handling.
The Gothamist
Gothamist has been going out more lately, and we've been debating various acceptable cocktails. Jake was fond of the Cosmopolitan, but Jen's withering opinion ruined it for him. Jen likes vodka straight up or with soda at times, but that can be Bad Idea Jeans. Finally, Gothamist settled on the screwdriver, as it's a little sweet, a little tart, and strong.
