Best Subway: 1 Train to Rule Them All

It's that time again! The Straphangers Campaign has released its annual State of the Subways report, and this year, the 1 train topped all other lines. This is amazing news for the 1 train - it was only in 2005 when the Straphangers found the 1/9 to be the schmutz-iest! The 1 train got high marks for "frequently scheduled service, arriving with more regularity, fewer dirty cars, and better announcements," but it did perform "below average on: a chance of getting a seat during rush hours, and delays caused by mechanical breakdowns." more ›

The G train's operator did see the men, but could not brake in time; Franklin was dragged by the train, while Hill was hit but is now in stable condition at Bellevue. From the Daily News:

The ill-fated workers were performing maintenance jobs in the station while the busy A and C lines were shut down for major track work. more ›

Donations Make the Convention Happen

Donations Make the Convention Happen

The shock of all shockers: Republicans can attract lots of big donations from corporations! The G.O.P. has apparently raised near the record amount for a convention, from contributors like Pfizer, AT&T, and Microsoft, as well an Indian tribe that runs a casino and our own Mayor Bloomberg, who put up a cool $5 million. While the goal is for $64 million, the article states the RNC's number is in the tens of millions and that this will usher in an era of privately-financed conventions, according to campaign experts. more ›
