Yesterday a press conference on the steps of City Hall was held in response to the eviction and closing of Tonic, the downtown venue that shut its doors after nine years. A committee of musicians, cultural activists, and supporters made a call for public and political intervention to protect new music/indie/avant/jazz in New York City and to ask the city to provide a minimum 200 capacity, centrally located venue for experimental music. From the press release, the coalition is asking:

As we stated before, there is far far more to CMJ than our little series of parties. Over 1000 bands were in town last week, and while nobody could possibly catch them all, the idea is to see as much as you can and maybe discover a few new favorites. Rather than scrape together a drab roundup of the day by day, we decided to award certain aspects of CMJ for making a mark on the 2006 marathon. Here we go...

COMEDY: Our favorite duo, Gil Faizon (Nick Kroll) and George St. Geegland (John Mulaney), will be bringing their "Oh Hello" show to UCB. Drop by, even if it's just for their famous Tuna-tina recipe. In addition, there will be NEW drink recipes...and special guests.

For those of you who like awesome music, for free, we suggest heading over to Sound Fix in Brooklyn. They'll be having some amazing instore shows today. First up at 1pm is Bonnie Prince Billy. Then at 2:30 Marbles and Clem Snide take over. The latter two are playing at the Bowery Ballroom tonight, the show is now sold out so this will be your only chance to catch them in New York this time around. Sound Fix is located at 110 Beford Ave, Williamsburg.

Brooklyn's Southpaw hosted a great evening of comedy on behalf of Concerts For Change Weds. night. Gothamist is crazy about Stella, the comedy trio comprised of Michael Ian Black (yeah, from Ed and I Love The Eighties),and the creators of Wet Hot American Summer, Michael Showalter and David Wain. It used to be that you could see these guys play tiny rooms like The Fez on an ongoing basis. Now their busy schedules don't have them getting around near as much, so we were really happy to get to see them perform.
