Neither the Jets nor the Dolphins have enjoyed their seasons too much. One half of the Jets' wins came on Sept. 23 when they edged the Dolphins 31-28 at home. Now they travel to Miami. They're 0-5 on the road, but Miami has lost 14 straight. Ironically, the Jets stand to gain the most if they lose and somehow pass the Dolphins in the NFL draft pecking order. But shhh! No one's thinking about that....

The Giants escaped London with an ugly 13-10 win on an ugly day on an ugly field. The Wembley Stadium turf was not made to handle our brand of football in the rain and it rapidly turned into mud, leaving the players struggling for footing and resulting in sloppy play on both sides of the ball.

The Giants are fortunate that Sunday’s game will be played in London. Fortunate because the venue should help them avoid taking the week off against a team that has nothing going for it. The Dolphins are winless and last week lost their best offensive player, Ronnie Brown, for the season. Brown’s injury came two weeks after the Dolphins lost their starting quarterback for the year and to make matters worse, one of their top defensive players, Zach Thomas, was hurt in a car crash and will miss this week’s game.

The list of 0-2 teams to win the Super Bowl is a short one, though it does include the 2001 Patriots. No team has won it after losing its first three games. Like it or not, the Jets find themselves on the first list and will try desperately to avoid being placed on the second one when they host Miami this week. Despite reports of limited action in practice this week, Chad Pennington seems guaranteed to start at quarterback, much to Jets fans' chagrin. They're the ones who cheered Pennington's departure -- or backup Kellen Clemens' arrival -- when the veteran left with an ankle injury two weeks ago against the Patriots. Even with Clemens' strong fourth-quarter performance last week, apologist Coach Eric Mangini remains eager to get Pennington in there. No matter how indifferent fans feel toward Pennington, Mangini continues to provide plenty of slack on the leash. Pennington doesn't cost a team too many games, but how many he wins for them remains the subject of many a debate.

Besides the Umenyiora pick, Reese has been widely respected for his work in scouting and was considered in many circles as a potential GM for some time. Since Reese comes from within the organization, that should simply personnel decisions and prevent any conflicts with Tom Coughlin.

Mike Nugent's field goal with 10 seconds remaining helped the Jets squeak by Miami, 13-10, during a rainy Christmas night in South Florida. The messy game looked like many others this season; it was defensive and sluggish. Who cares about style? With a win against Oakland on Sunday, the Jets will make the playoffs. Not too shabby for a team most thought would be dreadful.

If a 41-0 loss to Jacksonville from last week doesn't motivate the Jets, what will? If they can't rebound against the woeful Dolphins (1-4), which opponent could cure their woes? These are questions the Jets don't want to have to answered after they face the Dolphis at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday. A win would even the Jets' record at 3-3.
