  • Flyers 4, Islanders 1: Someone should tell the Islanders they're supposed to have the advantage when they have a power play. Mike Knuble's short-handed goal -- which he didn't even realize he scored -- put this game out of reach. New York has allowed 13 such scores this season, most in the league. The Islanders face a quick turnaround as well; Florida visits Uniondale on Sunday at 4 p.m.
  • Washington 4 Devils 0: The Capitals broke in their new goalie, Cristobal Huet and he responded with a shutout. The Devils kept it close through two periods, but Washington got a goal 43 seconds into the third and didn’t look back.
    • Rangers 5, Sabres 1: Five days off, but only 10 seconds to score. Sean Avery got the Blueshirts off to a great start and they finally got the taste of Sunday's overtime loss to Washington out of their mouths. "I don't think we expected that great of a start," said Brendan Shanahan. He has to be telling the truth. Who sits at his locker lacing up his skates and says, "I think we'll score within nine seconds"? No one, that's who.
    • Islanders 4, Thrashers 1: The Rangers took 10 seconds to score, but the Islanders denied the Thrashers a goal until 77 seconds remained in this one. Miroslav Satan, Ruslan Fedotenko, Marc-Andre Bergeron and Sean Bergenheim all scored for the Islanders. Don't look now -- actually, it's safe to look -- they've won three straight. Up next: San Jose on Monday. It's at home, so the team won't get lost.
    • Devils 3, Senators 2: Jason Kidd was in the NBA's skills challenge, but, even if his trade has fallen through, he still doesn't feel like a true local player. With him as the only such representative in Saturday's NBA festivities -- if not playing defense were a skill, Eddy Curry would have been there -- the Devils had to show off their talent. Arron Asham had as many goals as he has R's in his first name, and Martin Brodeur had 37 times as many saves as he has B's in his last. The Devils won despite finishing a 10-round shootout the night before.

Nigel Dawes got the Rangers on the board near the end of the third period as he converted a power play chance. Scott Gomez who assisted on the first goal followed with a goal of his own, setup by a great screen from Chris Drury at 3:53 of the second. Then the fights started, a linesman took a skate to the face but the Rangers and Valiquette kept their focus and got the win.

    • Clippers 103 Knicks 94: New York Giants Sam Madison, Kevin Dockery and R.W. McQuarters showed up for the game, which provided a great diversion from what happened on the floor. Leading 60-51 at halftime, the Knicks were blown away in the third quarter, getting outscored 28-14 as the Clippers cruised to the win.

  • Atlanta 104 Nets 92: Jason Kidd only took nine shots, scoring five points while three Hawks scored more than 20.
  • Sean Avery, placed on the top line with Gomez and Jagr got things started with a goal at 12:12 of the first period. Brandon Dubinsky scored a few minutes later and the Rangers never looked back. Jaromir Jagr capped the scoring in the third period with some hard work and a nice assist from Martin Straka who handed Jagr a replacement stick after he broke his original one.

New York doubled that lead in the second period thanks to some great work from the Dawes-Dubinsky-Prucha line. Prucha and Dawes got the goals and two points for their efforts, but Dubinsky had a wonderful game as well. Lundqvist lost the shutout in the third, but Montreal never seriously threatened and the Rangers earned two huge points.

    • Devils 4, Hurricanes 1: Martin Brodeur only needed to make 20 saves in this one. The Devils have now won seven of nine. Travis Zajac, Brian Gionta and Sergei Brylin all had goals, but it was Patrik Elias scoring the game-winner for the second straight time. They could have had six goals had they not hit the post twice. That fatigue-induced slow start is a distant memory for New Jersey, which leads the Atlantic Division.
    • Flyers 6, Rangers 2: When Ryan Hollweg scored two early goals, something had to tell the Rangers this wasn't a typical game. Then, poof! Bad news comes in threes, and it came in threes times two at the Garden. Henrik Lundqvist made it the whole game despite allowing one sixth of all the shots he faced in. Montreal visits New York on Saturday night.

  • Nets 109 Washington 106: The Nets had lost 11 games at the Izod Center so maybe a win in their last home game of 2007 is a good sign heading into 2008. Jason Kidd hit two big three-pointers in the final minutes to break a tie as part of his 20-point night. Richard Jefferson had 26 while Vince Carter had 24 for New Jersey.
  • Charlotte 105 Knicks 95: Surprise, surprise, the Knicks lost to an inferior team. Then again, Charlotte actually has more wins than New York. Whatever the reason, Friday night’s loss was all too familiar to Knicks’ fans. They didn’t play defense and committed 17 turnovers in the losing effort.
  • Things got testy at the end of the game as Shane Doan took a swipe at the puck after Rick DiPietro had saved it and a scrum erupted behind the net. Doan took the worst of it penalty wise as he received a game misconduct.

Rangers 4 Pittsburgh 2: That’s not a misprint, the Rangers really scored four goals tonight. Scott Gomez got things started for New York with a goal 7:35 into the game. But, Pittsburgh came right back and tied things on a Sergei Gonchar slap shot. But, Sean Avery did what he does best, get under opponents’ skin and he goaded Gary Roberts into a double minor. Roberts should know better and his mistake setup Michal Rozsival’s...

Of course, the other story in this game was Scott Gomez's first appearance against the Devils. At least he got to play a home game. The Devils finished their nine-game season-opening road trip 3-5-1 and will open their new arena in Newark on Saturday.

Our neighbors to the west broke ground today on a new stadium for the Giants and Jets at the Meadowlands. Rather, officials officially broke ground today, since it's obvious to anyone that's been to the Meadowlands that construction on the new two-team stadium has already started. The $1.3 billion stadium will be jointly owned by the two teams and make both feel at home, unlike Stadium, which irritates the Jets and their fans.

In a flash the Rangers remade their team on the first day of free agency, adding Chris Drury and Scott Gomez. Drury, grew up in Trumbull, Connecticut as a Rangers’ fan and has been one of the top centers in the game since breaking into the league with Colorado in 1998 (not to mention a Little League World Series champion). Gomez has been with the Devils since joining the league in 1999 winning two Stanley Cups and is a very good player at both ends of the ice.

  • Marlins 9, Mets 6: Things aren't going right if Alfredo Amezaga is hitting home runs off you. Chan Ho Park filled in for Orlando Hernandez, who was placed on the DL with bursitis. Maybe "filled in" isn't the best phrase. He lasted four innings, the first two 2 2/3 of which were perfect. That means that he imploded, allowing eight baserunners before getting the final four outs he would get.
  • After spending a week healing their wounds, the Rangers head into the second round of the playoffs tonight rested and ready. They will need to be at the top of their game to beat the Buffalo Sabres, a deep and talented team with plenty of guys who can fly all over the ice.

  • Nets 104, Knicks 95: With the win, which came in large part to Vince Carter's triple-double, the Nets swept the series from the Knicks and clinched no worse than the No. 7 seed. This game had to be on MSG because of how the TV contracts play out, but not too many Knicks fans watched. As the Nets ready for the playoffs, the Knicks count the hours to the golf season.
  • Jagr and Rozsival put the Rangers up 2-0 in the first before Eric Belanger cut the lead in half. The Rangers opened another two-goal lead in the second when Marcel Hossa made it 3-1, but Shane Hnidy cut the lead to 1 again midway through the period.

For some inexplicable reason, the NHL has scheduled all three local clubs to start their playoff chase tonight and to overlap with each other most nights. Because of that, fans of the various teams should get to know this website to figure out where they can watch the games.

  • Devil Rays 7, Yankees 6: This had about what you expect for a game played in football weather. It had errors, wild pitches, face masks and more. The Yankees played the uglier game, spoiling Andy Pettitte's return and splitting the season-opening series with the Devil Rays. They host Baltimore on Friday.
  • Carolina’s loss leaves them with 78 points, tied with the Islanders and two ahead of the Rangers in the very tight Eastern Conference. The Devils moved to within two of Buffalo for the conference lead.

Start with the defensive effort by the entire team, which was nonexistent until Malk Rose showed up in the third quarter. Seattle shot 52% for the game, which is inexcusable.

  • Bruins 4, Devils 1: Rare do you see the Devils come out flat, but that's exactly what they did at home against the Bruins. Boston is fighting for a playoff spot and New Jersey is safely ensconced, but that doesn't excuse an effort like that. The Devils let a young backup goalkeeper named Joey McDonald hold down the fort. Patrick Elias said his team "had nothing" and that "there just wasn't enough urgency on our part." That about covers it.
  • Jared Jeffries was back in the starting lineup and responded with 14 points while Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury added 27 and 22 points apiece.

  • New Jersey 2 Atlanta 1: The Devils trailed most of the game, but came back thanks to two power-play goals in the third period. Martin Brodeur kept New Jersey in it with 25 saves and Sergei Breylin had the game-winner.

  • Blues 3, Devils 2: If the Devils had this result against the Blues earlier in the season, it would be considered dreadful. But St. Louis has won eight of its last 11. The Devils, enjoying a six-point lead in the Atlantic Division over the Rangers, had won three straight.
  • The Devils jumped out to an early lead off of a John Madden goal, but New York took a 2-1 lead in the third after Petr Prucha scored his ninth goal of the year. Thomas Pock was called for tripping with just under five minutes left and the Devils converted to tie the game.

-Rangers 5, Stars 2: Matt Cullen scored two goals, including the go-ahead score 57 seconds into the second period as the Rangers rolled to their fifth straight win. They haven't lost since Dec. 3, when the Islanders took them down. With the Devils' loss, the Rangers lead the Atlantic Division by four points, and they're finally playing hockey like they did during their best stretches last year. Thursday's game was wide open, but the Rangers adapted. Henrik Lunqvist made 43 saves.
