Are the Decemberists coming to Broadway? Maybe! In a recent Billboard interview vocalist/guitarist Colin Meloy discussed the prospect and pointed out that he grew up doing theater. Further, “it happens that the director Michael Mayer, who directed Green Day’s American Idiot musical on Broadway, is the guy that got me going about doing a musical...We’re still talking and there’s potential for a musical down the line, for sure.” Okay, we're not going to hold our breath then, but still—that'd be fun. And while we're thinking about bands making musicals, we wonder what ever happened to the planned Aaron Sorkin-scripted musical of the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots... [via Stereogum]
The Decemberists, The Musical, Could Happen
Gothamist's Week in Rock, Volume 33
Sick of all that boring "indie" music polluting your fresh Greenpoint air this summer, Mr. cynical anonymous Gothamist commenter? Well maybe you prefer the jam-trance mania of the Disco Biscuits instead! No? Well a whole crowd of people did, comfortably filling McCarren Pool earlier this week with people who (no joke) bought their tickets on 4/20 @ 4:20 in the afternoon. Those in attendance seemed to have a blast, despite some complaints about the sets being a bit too short (openers Umphrey's McGee only got 90 minutes.) If you missed the show, NYC Taper recorded the whole thing and posted both bands sets online the day after. Check em out. (pic via i y e r's flickr)
New Venue Alert: Terminal 5
In their quest to take over New York, Bowery Presents is opening yet another venue! Ask just about anyone (and we have) and they'll say that the Bowery Ballroom is their favorite place to see and/or play music - so who better to open even more spaces than the creators of that one?
Elsewhere in the ist-a-verse
Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico.
Spitzer (and Everyone Else) on Colbert Report Last Night
We're sort of over the Colbert vs The Decemberists publicity stunt, but it aired last night - and it was pretty hilarious. There were appearances by: Henry Kissinger, the New York Times Anthony DeCurtis, Jim Anderson, Eliot Spitzer, Peter Frampton and Apples in Stereo's Robert Schneider (Stereogum has the lyrics to his song from the show last night). No Colin Meloy, though...Colbert said, "The rest of the band is back in Portland probably growing hemp and trying to find the most pretentious rhyme for "salamander". I'll save you guys some time, it's "coriander"."
Colbert vs Meloy vs Ott (vs Gerard vs Bear)

'Tis the Season (for Blogger Lists)
Ah, the end of the year is upon us...and that means one thing: end of the year lists. Information Leafblower is a little ahead of the game and has posted his fourth annual "Top 40 Bands In America (As Voted On By A Bunch Of Effing Music Bloggers That Only Listen To Cooler Than You Guitar Based Indie Rock And Not Much Else)" list.
Band Gear Stolen, Again
Over the past year we've heard of way too many incidents of equipment being stolen from bands. We just received an email from a reader asking about a possible theft (from this weekend?):
General Admission: Death Cab, The Decemberists and Stars @ Summerstage
When the Summerstage lineup was announced last spring, one show clearly stood out from the rest. To have three of the most popular indie-pop bands playing the same bill at Central Park was as much a Seth Cohen dream come true as it was for Gothamist. Naturally, we were there.
Sell Outs
Since this seems to be hard to grasp for some we just want to reiterate that this post is just to let you know that we've noticed a few tickets that are on sale for shows that we believe may sell out. We won't be repeating any ticket listings we posted last time, so you may want to give that list a once over as well. Also, we put a $ sign next to overpriced shows that are in no way worth the amount being charged.
Cabaret License: This Week's Music Megalist (BIG WEEK)
Hyper-important must-see event of the month, first:
Coolfer's Super Special Music Picks
CMJ is here. For New Yorkers, you've probably already seen many of these bands. Everybody plays here. But the number of shows and the number of people crammed into the clubs for these shows is greater than normal. Be careful out there.
Sell Outs
This is where Gothamist tells you about all of the shows you should buy tickets for NOW because they will in fact sell out, and you will in fact be scanning Craigslist in hopes of finding a ticket for double the face value at the last minute. So pay attention and purchase wisely. This months list was particularly hard to compose because of the ratio of really good shows to the amount of money we have in our pocket.
The Decemberists
Gothamist did not know much about The Decemberists before seeing them last week at the Mercury Lounge, but one thing we were sure of was that the song, "Song for Myla Goldberg," had to be about Brooklyn author Myla Goldberg who wrote The Bee Season. And lo and behold, the Onion AV Club and Journal News confirmed things. The Decemberists also have a song called "Billy Liar," an homage to the play and movie. Both songs are from the album Her Majesty the Decemberists.
