The badly injured survivor of the incident where a garbage truck ran onto a Midtown sidewalk, killing a vacationing British couple, figures his New York instinct to bypass slow-moving tourists ultimately saved his life. Hollis resident Abayomi Henderson told the Daily News he had just finished working out at a nearby gym when he saw Jacqueline Timmins and Andrew Hardie (pictured) on West 35th St. near 6th Ave. Tuesday night.

Historical ecologists and research cartographers are using historical pre-Revolution military maps produced by the British to create a 21st Century digital rendering of the topography of Manhattan in the 17th Century, before the arrival of European colonists. The New Yorker has a slideshow of a number of images that are attempts to show Manhattan as it was occupied solely by Lenape Indians. The basis for the topographical model was drawn from this 1782 map* drawn up by the British military to help defend the colony from George Washington and the Continental Army. The image above is a rendering of what a 17th Century Times Square looked like in comparison to West 42nd St. today.

Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt, who has completely covered her house in mosaic tiles.

The British teen whose parents were frantically looking for him after he ran away from his London home on Monday was found at JFK yesterday. Seventeen- year-old George Lenon had an argument with his parents and managed to get himself on a plane to New York. Lenon had been seen at JFK's immigration area, but never showed up at an Upper West Side hotel where he claimed he was staying.

The Germans are so weird AND so clever! Der Spiegel reports that the Institute for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research in Nuremberg foraged various rivers in Europe and the U.S. to find the "substance produced by the human body during cocaine consumption." And when they hit the Hudson River, apparently the numbers were through the roof for consumption, when taking into account statistics for drug use:

For example in New York, IBMP teams searched the Hudson River and found the by-products of a projected cocaine consumption totaling 16.4 tons per year. There are approximately 3.4 million people aged 15 to 65 living in the Hudson's watershed. According to the United Nations "World Drug Report," 2.8 percent of Americans in this age group use cocaine at least once a year. That would mean that about 95,000 people are responsible for an annual consumption of 16.4 tons of pure cocaine -- a per capita rate of 172 grams per year.

, which had at least the benefit of still being a well-crafted spy novel until the third act.

Holy manatee! David Blaine, everyone's favorite magician punchline (think of him as the 21st century Doug Henning), will live in an aquarium for a week outside of Lincoln Center. According to the AP:

The "human aquarium" in which Blaine will float is a specially built 8-foot acrylic sphere. He will receive liquid nutrition through a tube and the water will be kept at a balanced temperature to help keep his core temperature close to 98.6 degrees F.

The British can be cutting edge with their sense of humor and style at times, but some automobile-related news makes reassures us that high school prom kids can be as kooky across the pond as they are here: Apparently being chauffeured in a NYPD cruiser is becoming very popular, because nothing says "That special night of your life during high school" like "I was arrested for [something ranging from riding my bike to killing someone] in the Big Apple"! British car rental company Frankie's Yankees owner tells the Daily News that "teenage girls just love" going to the prom in a cruiser (originally purchased for British productions of films set in New York) - and owner Frankie Lancaster and his son will dress up in NYPD uniforms while on the job; no word on whether they do a good cop-bad cop routine. Lancaster also says that British police think the Crown Vic is nicer than their rides and people who leave prison sometimes rent the NYPD cars, which is pretty brilliant. While we think the idea of going to the prom in an NYPD cruiser is goofy (a Department of Sanitation san truck is another story), we ultimately give the idea a thumbs up for Prom 2006 because we really hate the stretch SUVs.

The moment people who are dying for some sort of royal-related mishap have been waiting for has come: Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, have arrived in New York on their first visit to the colonies. Apparently, the British idea of a memorial for the British citizens who died at the World Trade Center is some sort of engraved gong. But Camilla did look right at home in this AP photo, as she has the "something smell funny" look anyone else would have if they had to listen to George Pataki blathering on. The British press is having a field day with the American press calling their visit a "bore."

The beloved Douglas Adams book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, has already been made into a BBC series (now on DVD), and will be made into a film this April. Casting thus far: Martin Freeman (The Office) as Arthur Dent, Mos Def as Ford Prefect, and Zooey Deschanel as Trillian. The role of Zaphod Beeblebrox has not be cast yet. The British directing duo, Hammer & Tongs (aka Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith), directs the screenplay written by the late Adams (Douglas Adams's official site on HHGG).
In other nerd movie news, Film Feed has leaked Star Wars 3 footage (MOV file). Yup, looks like it'll suck. Again. But surprising that Lucasfilm hasn't forced it off yet, which could then be an elaborate red herring hoax by George Lucas. [Via reader John]
Then there's the movies' ultimate nerd of 2003: Toby Radloff, friend of Harvey Pekar (American Splendor). Fametracker has a nice dissection of Judah Friedlander who played Radloff so well in the film, American Splendor.

As 601am reported, Prince William wants to live in NY after university, perhaps working at an art gallery or auction house. The British newspaper the story comes from claims that it's because the Prince thinks New York will give him anonymity. Gothamist snorts and imagines gossip columnists getting ready to link him to various socialite girls and models.
