The Under the Radar festival of cutting edge international theater, curated by former P.S. 122 artistic director Mark Russell, continues through next weekend. Here’s a brief rundown of three shows seen so far. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea: British theater company 1927 has staged a spellbinding blend of silent film-era aesthetics and macabre storytelling in this American premiere. Accompanied by a haunting live piano score, two pale women (pictured above) escort......

Kingswood: Aussie owner of Nolita's Ruby's takes the leap from sandwich shop to sit-down restaurant. With the feel of an indoor garden, Kingswood serves up dishes like cured duck breast with fig chutney, a roasted peach salad with crispy prosciutto and white balsamic or a rack of lamb with tomato orzo. In late October, the space will expand to include a downstairs lounge. 121 West 10th Street between Greenwich and Sixth Avenues. (212) 645-0044. The......

Yankees 11, Royals 5: Good thing the Yankees didn't make that Alex Rodriguez for Ervin Santana move this offseason. Rodriguez hit two homers -- Nos. 50 and 51 -- as the Yankees cruised past the Royals. Detroit beat Seattle again, so the wild-card lead stands at three games. Johnny Damon, who looked like a corpse for most of the season, has played better of late. He socked his 10th homer as the Yankees gave plenty......

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. has secured the votes necessary to purchase Dow Jones & Co., Inc. which includes The Wall Street Journal itself. The win comes after a lengthy proxy battle in which the Bancrofts––the family that has acted as stewards of the company from afar for more than a century––resisted a very generous overture from Murdoch. The Australian media tycoon eventually won the day by convincing a......

Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: person struck by D train at 34th Street, serious moving vehicle accident on Canal Street, and a fatal fall victim at Bed, the club in Chelsea (the victim fell down an elevator shaft.) Here's an interesting map of the long closed City Hall Station. The nefarious Brooklyn footlicker, who targeted more than 70 women on the subway, has been sentenced to four months in prison and a $1000 fine.......

Yeesh, there sure are a lot of new movies out this weekend. Choose wisely and you will be well rewarded. In a shameless bid for our "penguins are cute" bias, Warner Brothers releases the animated Happy Feet about singing and tap dancing Emperor Penguins. If only furry black and white birds who rap to Stevie Wonder beats weren't so darn adorable! If you're still in Arrested Development withdrawal, the hilarious Will Arnett stars in Bob......

After yesterday's news that Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin had died off an Australian coast while filming a segment for a series on oceanlife, it now turns out that his death was caught on film. Irwin's official cause of death was a heart attack, but it was a heart attack caused by being stabbed through the heart by stingray's poisonous barb. Authorities have reviewed the tape and said that there "was no evidence [Irwin] provoked......

The Guardian is reporting that Cate Blanchett is one of the actors playing the role of Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes's biopic. This wouldn't, of course, be the first time that a woman has played a man, or vice versa. The Australian actress and the Duluth musician don't have that much physically in common, but that's no matter. There will also be a lot of other actors playing Dylan. The film, I'm Not There,......

The United States softball team won their third Olympic gold medal in a row yesterday, defeating Australia 5-1. The Australian run was the first run the US team had given up all tournament long. In their nine games to gold, they had eight shutouts and scored 51 runs, a team ERA of 0.13 and a .343 team batting average. Insane numbers for the best softball team in the world. This was the first time in......
