Earlier this week, the NY Times had an article about how Apple's retail stores were uncommonly successful. The Apple Stores contribute to 20% of revenue, unlike other big brands whose brick-and-mortar offerings tend to be more about brand presence than actual ringing of cash registers (example: the Samsung Experience store at the Time Warner Center doesn't actually sell Samsung products). Experts credit Apple with creating stores that seem like a community gathering places, where......

The Apple computer company loves its self-same-named metropolis. Word on the street is that its London store will be eclipsed in size by a new emporium being planned for the Meatpacking District at 401 W 14th St. Because our rendered concept graphic is a bit rough, even for the meatpacking district, we will direct you to AppleInsider, where they've got their polishing down to a science. "More important, however, is the sheer scope of the......

THEATER: This week marks your last chance to see TRUTH {the heart is a million little pieces above all things}, a one-man show by Mike Daisey that NYMetro declares “a delirious, brainy, hilarious, infuriating experience from which one emerges perversely hopeful.” The play follows the fictional and non-fictional stories of James Frey's self-destruction, the sordid and shocking tale of J.T. LeRoy, and Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese poet whose great works were written by warring multiple......

After last month's breastfeeding confrontation at Toys R Us (which was followed by a Times Squre nurse in), the Daily News decided to send a reporter undercover. Well, sort of. Tracy Connor, who we really liked while watching Bravo's Tabloid Wars, and her three month old daughter Charlie went on a breastfeeding odyssey in "humble and posh locations" all around town to see "who is hip to NIP" (that's Nurse In Public). Connor and baby......

We caught The Rapture not too long ago at a VMA afterparty at Gotham Hall. They were fantastic. Tonight, they play at the Soho Apple store, for free! We can't imagine hearing such a loud dancey band in such a clean, minimalist store with lots of breakables around...but we're sure it'll be a fun time. Get there early for a seat...not that you're going to want to sit during this performance! Later, the boys......

If you love photography, there's only one place you should be tonight: the Apple Store SoHo from 5:30-8pm. Whoa - Think Secret says that the Apple Store planned for Fifth Avenue and 58th Street may be a 24-hour location. That would be crazy - 24 hour retail establishment across from the Plaza (condos) and down the street from the Sherry-Netherland? Gothamist can imagine people who hate their waits at the SoHo Store and TekServe will make 3AM appointments to make sure they can complain about their iPod's crappy battery life or iBook's weird......

On Sundays, Gothamist publishes reviews by its contributors and friends. The opinions belong only to the author, who once again, in this case, is me. Pop-up stores seem to be the latest rage in New York City retailing. This trend involves a major brand coming into town, renting a large retail space for a month or two, and creating a "retail experience" to promote their brand. For instance, in September, the Illy coffee company opened......

The holidays are upon us. Tomorrow sees the release of two of the more eagerly awaited films of the season, and we haven't even hit Thanksgiving yet! We've been hearing fantastic things about the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. It wowed audiences at the Toronto Film Festival in September, and now critics are talking about Joaquin Phoenix's performance as they did last year about Jamie Foxx. One huge difference: Foxx lip-synced everything in Ray;......

Last night we were told that the Secret Machines were playing a (secret?) show at the Apple Store in Soho at 10pm. We didn't go, and haven't heard a thing about it. Did it happen, was anyone there? We need closure. Other not so secret events at the Apple Store are coming up that also have our interest piqued. Legendary Master of Music Photography: Bob Gruen. Gruen is one of the most well known and......
