Joe Torre opened his press conference this afternoon by saying that he had “just gotten off the phone with George Steinbrenner and he has informed me that I will be the manager in 2007.” So closes one of the more bizarre 48 hours in Yankees’ history. First we heard Joe was gone, then he was coming back, and then no decision had been reached. (And somewhere in there, Giuliani called Steinbrenner to save Torre's job.) Now we know, Torre is returning.

In the end it was familiar demons, bad starting pitching, shaky defense and a lack of timely hitting that did in the Yankees as they fell to the Angels 5-3. The Angels advance to the ALCS and take on the White Sox starting Tuesday night.

The Angels used some timely hitting and some poor defense by the Yankees to even their best-of-five ALDS series with a 5-3 victory Wednesday night. Orlando Cabrera delivered the key hit, a two-run single in the seventh inning that give the Angels the lead for good. Bengie Molina added two hits and a home run in the eighth.

The Yankees could not have asked for much more in their 4-2 win over the Angels in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. They got a solid pitching performance from Mike Mussina, enough runs in the first two innings off Bartolo Colon, and a competetent bullpen performance to close it out. With the win, the Yankees have taken the first of two games played in Anaheim, and they hold the hammer since two of the next three, if necessary, will be at home.

Most people were not expecting the Yankees to recover from their 11-19 start, so it is no surprise that most experts are picking the Angels to win their ALDS matchup, which starts tonight. After all, the Yankees are opening up a postseason series on the road for the first time since 2001 and the lack of home field advantage might tip the balance in a series where both teams are fairly evenly matched.
