It was originally named the 8th Avenue Subway, but the 'A' train turns 75 today, having opened September 10th, 1932. Officials are holding a ceremony at the line's northernmost station––Inwood/207th St.––and will be running six antique railcars from the 1930s during the day to commemorate the event. This is more than the Eighth Ave. Subway garnered on its opening day: Back in 1932, just before midnight, transit workers simply dropped chains blocking access to......

The Rangers head home with a 2-0 lead in the series. Islanders 3 Sabres 2: Rick DiPietro returned and stopped 32-of-34 shots to lead the Islanders to victory. Marc-Andre Bergeron scored a power-play goal in the third period to give New York the victory. Lightning 3 Devils 2:......

Subway riders from Inwood to the Rockaways should steel themselves, because those delays they experienced yesterday were planned and should continue for the next five weekends. The A and C lines are undergoing track work to replace 70-year-old rails. Over the long term this should result in smoother rides and safer service. But over the short term expect no C trains between Upper Manhattan and Brooklyn's Euclid Ave. on Saturdays and Sundays. The A train......

-Mets 5 D’Backs 0: Alay Soler had his finest outing as a Met, going the distance while only allowing two hits three walks as New York beat Arizona for the third-consecutive game. Carlos Beltran kept up his hot hitting with a RBI double to get the Mets on the board. Endy Chavez had two hits while Lastings Milledge has a hit and a stolen base. -Oakland 5 New York 2: The A’s added injury......

Damn, it's cold out there! Gothamist recently had a friend check weather.com before deciding whether to venture out of her home. News flash, folks: It's January! It's cold, finally! Put a coat on and let's rock: First up on the week's list of maybe-sees: Hard-Fi (at left) at Bowery Ballroom. What we've heard sounds interesting in a Clash-loving way, if not NME-freakout-worthy. Competent pop band Nightmare of You supports. Residencies still abound, with Richard Buckner......

This morning's West 4th Street subway fire caused a lot of excitement downtown. First of all, the new helicopters: The nation loves seeing New Yorkers have problems with their underground trains. Second, Sixth Avenue's streets were closed, with traffic backed up for blocks. Third, tons of firefighters and police officers on the scene. Subway service was restored by 11:30AM, but with the Sixth Avenue lines running on Eight Avenue. Reroutings, via NY1: - The......

The Yankees finally took a step in the right direction this weekend, shutting out the Oakland A’s 6-0 and winning their first series at home since they took two of three from Boston to start the season. Much-maligned Kevin Brown pitched seven shutout innings a day after Mike Mussina pitched the first complete-game shutout for the Yankees in nearly two years. Alex Rodriguez, Tino Martinez and Jorge Posada all had home runs, and for two......

The extent of the C line damage from Sunday's signal room fire at Chambers Street prompts key begins-with-c words like "Chaos," confusion, and "Calling in sick for five years!" The A is now running on the F, with the C suspended for 3-5 years. The fact that it takes the MTA 3-5 years to repair a subway line, a time period when skyscrapers can be built twice over, tells us a couple things about the......

Well, the Siren Music Festival is over and we have to go back to actually paying for our live music--most of the time. The next week is filled with great shows, and a handfull of them are either free or require a very small donation. Gotta love NYC in the summer! The Hives have a new album out and they're playing Irving Plaza tonight and tomorrow with those cute and rather rockin' girls, Sahara Hotnights.......

I live near the 96th Street stop on the B/C line and every time I walk by, I can't help but notice that the entrance on the north side of the 97th has a sign indicating that the station is for the B, C, and K train. As far as I know there was never a K train, and everyone I know is equally stumped as to why there's such a sign. Is it......

How come certain stations at 34th St (A/C/E and 2/3) have it set up so that you can't cross the platform to get from the express line to the local? You actually have to go down and up stairs to get to the express line from the local. It doesn't make sense. -Renee As regular riders of the A, we always see confused people at the Penn Station subway platform, especially late at night, when......

The Straphangers and Tri-State Transportation Campaign have been collecting collected suggestions for how to celebrate the subway system's 100th anniversary next October. The Daily News has the top ten suggestions: - Have a special edition Subway M&M's. The A train would be honored, for example, with blue candies with the letter A on their shells. - Publish a coffee table book of subway maps and how they have changed since 1904. - Issue a commemorative......
