Willow The Cat's Family To NYC "Owner": Thank You

Willow The Cat's Family To NYC "Owner": Thank You

After telling us that Willow the Colorado cat had been living in Brooklyn, our tipster added, "If either of my cats disappeared for years I would just want to know what happened and that he or she was loved... Please contact her Colorado family!" So we did: We got in touch with Jamie Squires who said she was "grateful" to Willow's New York owner for taking care of her. And how does Squires know Willow was taken care of? "She's fat!" Squires joked, referring to how Willow, a small calico, was five-and-a-half pounds when she ran off and is now clocking in a healthy seven pounds. more ›

Thank You For Shoveling, or Not

Thank You For Shoveling, or Not

The Neighbors Project has created a way to Thank You For Shoveling, with a polite little card campaign. Their website explains: "When you're trying to get somewhere during the winter -- work, bar, grocery store, gym, etc -- there's nothing more frustrating than being delayed because you're wading through inches of snow, or slipping and falling on the ice. It's a recipe for resentment on your block. So help spread the word about how much... more ›

A Few Predictions For Tonight's Golden Globe Awards

A Few Predictions For Tonight's Golden Globe Awards

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association voting pool for the Golden Globes only consists of 83 members, but every year their mainstream tastes become one of the potential early prognosticators for the Emmys and the Oscars. Over in Beverly Hills today, the stylists are putting the finishing touches on the stars' couture, that long red carpet is being laid and some assistant is double checking the seals on the envelopes. Here in New York of course, we get to play the more enviable armchair critic job hashing out who might be taking home this year's statues after tonight's telecast [8 - 11 pm on NBC]. more ›

Police Arrest One in Connection With Home Invasion Robbery

Police Arrest One in Connection With Home Invasion Robbery

The police have charged one of three men involved in a Borough Park home invasion robbery. A pair of robbers had entered Wolf and Sarah Sicherman's home through a back window on Monday night. They cut the electricity, tied the couple up (threatening them with boxcutters), and made Wolf Sicherman open up his safe. The safe had not only jewelry but cash, because Sicherman was going to buy an apartment building the next day, and the robbers got away with over $200,000. But not before thanking Sarah Sicherman for being so nice during the robbery. Were they trying to be the "Thank You" robbers? more ›

Weekend Movies: Potter's back, with Cash at his heels

The holidays are upon us. Tomorrow sees the release of two of the more eagerly awaited films of the season, and we haven't even hit Thanksgiving yet! We've been hearing fantastic things about the Johnny Cash biopic ; Phoenix sings all the songs himself. We're not really sure whether that's a plus or not, though, no matter how well he sings. more ›

Bloomberg Won't Run For Public Office After This

Bloomberg Won't Run For Public Office After This

Mayor Michael Bloomberg spent his post-election day basking in his resounding victory, traveling the city (hugging wellwishers, photo ops with kids, buying pastries), promising that he would turn to a career of philanthropy after his second term is over in 2009. And he did work some. The NY Times dives into the voting returns, and says that he "crossed ehtnic barriers" for his win: Estimates say that Bloomberg got about half of the black vote, and about 30% of the Latino vote, giving him a "winning multiethnic coalition," and disproving that minorities always vote as a bloc. (Here are some more numbers from the NY Post.) However, Fernando Ferrer-supporter, the Reverend Al Sharpton, pointed out that many low income neighborhoods voted heavily for Ferrer, showing that there "really are two New Yorks." more ›
