Can you imagine the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus without elephants? The fight between Ringling Bros. and various animal advocacy groups, including the ASPCA, the Humane Society, and Animal Protection Institute, may be closer to a trial after six years of various lawsuits and court orders between the two sides. The animal groups claim that Ringling Bros. abuses its elephants, using sharp hooks and chairs for training, and separating babies from mother elephants, while Ringling Bros. claims their practices are, in fact, humane. The AP summarizes some of the issues, including how the U.S. Department of Agriculture (who knew that agency regulated elephants) did find that the circus failed to comply with the Animal Welfare Act, but Ringling Bros. managed to get out of being "formally classified as a violator"; on the other side, a Texas A&M professor who traveled with the circus never saw "overt cruelty."

Gothamist thinks those Agricultural and Mechanical kids need to take a ride on the subway. Have they ever tried riding some of the trains during off-peak times? Besides, all our walking and biking during the transit strike have got to count for something. Furthermore, we seem to rank in the ten worst when it comes to number of parks and open spaces per capita. That seems to come with having a gigantic built-up city, doesn't it.
- We have fewer gyms per capita than any city but Detroit (they were last)
- We have fewer bars and taverns per capita than any city in their survey (this is actually a thing)

It's a shame that the college football season has come to an end, and worse still that the Orange Bowl was such a dud. Gothamist's final rankings of the 2004 season:
Because every election day need's a new football poll, here is this week's installment of the Gothamist Top 15 (last week's). Quite an interesting weekend, with the big three in Florida all losing. With six undefeated teams left, the BCS has some shaking out to do, especially if some of those teams pick up a loss.
The Giants have been torched by every first unit theyve played against so far this preseason and last night was no different. Baltimore did as they pleased on both sides of the ball on their way to a 24-3 halftime lead and a 27-17 victory over the Giants last night at a sparsely populated Giants Stadium.
