Yesterday was the last day of the "dirty bomb" terror drill that the NYPD, as well as many other agencies, conducted to test its abilities to detect radioactive materials that could be used in a terrorist threat, as part of the Securing the Cities program. Traffic was backed up in Brooklyn by the Williamsburg Bridge as the NYPD inspected cars (and cyclists?) for mock suspicious materials.

NYPD Starts Nuclear Terror Drill Today
If you're on the East Side and wonder, "Huh, why are approximately 80 police vehicles and 160 officers assigned to them departing from in front of the United Nations on First Avenue?" here's your answer: They're conducting a nuclear terrorism drill today through Saturday—it's a "full-scale exercise involving hundreds of personnel from 150 law enforcement and other first responder agencies in the tri-state region...[involving] activity in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey on land, including rail and highways, and in the waterways of the region," according to the NYPD.
MTA Holds Terror Drill At Grand Central Terminal
Yesterday morning, the MTA's Metro-North Railroad, along with other agencies, held an "emergency preparedness exercise" at Grand Central Terminal. The annual exercise involved 30 "victims," including two who needed to be transported to hospitals, which resulted in firefighters and EMTs taking some volunteers out on stretchers through the terminal and into Midtown.
FYI: Transit Drill At Commuter Hubs Today
Today, those of you passing through big transit hubs, like Grand Central, Penn Station and Herald Square, may seem more police officers and other law enforcement agencies in force. That's because it's the second big transit drill involving the NYPD (including its Counterterrorism, ESU, K9, Transit and plainclothes units); police from Amtrak, the MTA, the Port Authority, and NJ Transit; the National guard; the TSA; and NY State's Homeland Security. According to WABC 7, "Beginning at approximately 7 a.m., commuters will experience increased police presence; bag screenings and inspections of train and subway cars." The last drill was in April.
Transit Drill Conducted In Busy NYC Commuter Spots
Yesterday, hundreds of NYPD cops, Port Authority cops, MTA cops, NJ Transit cops and National Guardsman others participated in a terror drill at busy transit hubs, such as Grand Central Terminal and Penn Station, in the city. According to the Post, the "drill [was] dubbed Operation MASS -- or Multi-Agency Super Surge, officials said. The regularly-scheduled drill -- which lasted about three hours -- is designed to see how cops can mobilize and coordinate their efforts in the event of an attack."
NYPD, FBI Complete Queens Terror Drill Exercise
The multi-agency—including the NYPD and FBI—terror drill that was conducted in Queens over the past few nights was deemed a success by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. He told the AP, "We plan for the worst with the best exercises possible. This one was realistic — at night, in the rain, with traffic. We put our personnel to the test and they performed well." The exercise involved hundreds of police officers and federal agents, who were on the hunt for a radiological device.
NYPD, FBI Drill In Queens Tonight Through Thursday
Drivers who might be taking the Clearview Expressway tonight, we received this alert about the Clearview/73rd Avenue exit: "The Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York City Police Department, U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Department of Defense will be conducting a routinely scheduled, joint interoperability full scale training exercise in the New York City area during June 9-11, 2009. Resources from a variety of federal, state and local agencies will be participating to test and determine compatibility and response proficiency. Please be advised that due to this full scale exercise, traffic delays are anticipated on the Clearview Expy. between the hours of 9 PM on Tuesday, June 9th and 4 AM. on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009." There will also be some exercises through Thursday (we're assuming Wednesday night through early Thursday morning.) About 300 cops and almost 400 FBI agents and analysts are participating and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the drill will "address the possibility of a nuclear or radioactive device coming into the city." (Yes, like a dirty bomb.)
