FOOD: Trestle on Tenth, the “homey joins hearty” Swiss-inflected restaurant that takes its name from its proximity to the High Line and the avenue where it’s found, kicks off a special five-night series called “metzgete.” The Swiss tradition loosely translates to “butchers affair” and arises from the practice of salvaging every scrap of pig after the winter slaughter – “especially those parts that would or could not be dried, smoked or pickled for later consumption.” The $24 Trestle plate will include everything from braised belly to homemade bratwurst to liver and blood sausages. – John Del Signore

There are a number of restaurants opening in 2008 that we've been eagerly awaiting and we thought we'd highlight some that particularly piqued our interest and have us drooling in anticipation.

Vynl, 507 Columbus AvenueOn three separate nights cameras caught the critters feasting "on scraps that were left on the dirty kitchen floor and climbing over crates of glassware" at Da Silvano's (pictured top left). The owner there said the problem was caused by nearby construction and recent renovations and claimed he will be throwing out everything edible in the restaurant and starting fresh. Ah, not even the celeb hot spots can escape the wrath of roaches and rodents.

July 19: Summer Wine Tasting

Recently the occasion popped up to go by Trestle on Tenth, the newest restaurant on this still burgeoning, food focused stretch of Tenth Avenue north of 14th Street.

Thanks to the folks at New York Mag for bringing this one to our attention. Tia Pol's Chef Alex Raij is putting together a Valentine's day menu that contains loving tributes to her favorite dishes throughout the city. Some of Alex's favorites are ours too: Banh Mi So 1's amazing sandwiches, Pearl Oyster Bar's lobster rolls, 'ino's truffled egg toast, and Momofuku's pork buns. For each dish, she creates her own variation.

There's plenty going on to celebrate the Lunar New year, but of course we're focused on the food. Explore Chinatown's site has a list of restaurants offering special feasts for the occasion, including Gothamist favorite Fuleen Seafood, and explains the different foods that are traditionally eaten as part of the celebration.

It's all about the latest addition to the Batali/Bastianich empire in this morning's food news. The big one (and we mean really big -- 24,000 square feet between the dining area and the kitchen): Del Posto. Frank Bruni at the Times gives us fair warning of what to expect:

The New York Times reports that the newest addition to the Rosa Mexicano empire is scheduled to open this Saturday. Fingers crossed -- it's always good to have another location for our passionfruit margarita and fresh guacamole fix. Also open: Cookshop, from the folks who brought you Five Points, (yes, we know about all the damn hype); 156 Tenth Avenue (20th Street), (212) 924-4440. Also "Loft, a lounge and restaurant mixing Asian and Mediterranean, 505 Columbus Avenue (84th Street), (212) 362- 6440. Scarlatto, a Roman-style restaurant in the former Pierre au Tunnel space: 250 West 47th Street, (212) 730-4535." Florence adds that Black Pearl is opening in Park Slope at 833 Union Street: "[t]his is a new spot for seafood prepared by Frederico Duarte, who worked at Dos Caminos and Da Silvano." The name and early rumors make us think it's related to the East Village clam shack hidden in the back of Julep, but Dos Caminos and Da Silvano hardly make us think of lobster rolls.

Police believe one man is responsible for seven sexual assaults in NYC and NJ over the past year. This past Friday, he grabbed a woman who was leaving the club Cain in Chelsea, and then dropped her off in Elizabeth, NJ, after raping her. This incident occured at 4AM, at West 24th Street and Tenth Avenue; Cain is on West 27th near Tenth. This MO is similar to an incident last Halloween, when a woman leaving Crobar was grabbed into a car and raped. Another woman was attacked last September, when she was walking to work at 5:55AM on West 28th Street. The description of the attacker has been similar in all incidents, as well as NJ attacks: A white or light-skinned Hispanic man in his mid-20s, about 5-feet-6 with a thin build. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers, (800) 577-TIPS.

Newsday has a great article about Lopate and in it, he suggests some ideas for future waterfront development:

You have this strange phenomenon of all this underused land in the most intensely built- up real estate market in the world. So what are you going to do with it? The identity of New York resides in the answer. Because we've become so environmentally aware, there's come to be this equation of open space with park space. Greening the edges [with parks] is a good idea in places. But you don't need a chlorophyll cordon sanitaire around the edge. Why can't you have newspaper kiosks overlooking the water or movie theaters? Why not a post office, so that people would be brought there by their daily functions?
Why not indeed? Go listen to Lopate speak; he starts his tour tomorrow with TWO events, one at Makor (noon, 35 West 67th Street) and the other at 192 Books (6:30PM, 192 Tenth Avenue). There will be six other NYC speaking engagements until May.
