Wednesday Food News: Early Edition

Julia Moskin sits in for Bruni again this week, gives two stars to the new dining room at the Morgan Library. It's eccentric, she says--open only during museum hours, which means that it only serves dinner on Friday nights, and even then only until 9pm. But "there's no institution that joins a menu and a museum as seamlessly." more ›

Buffett Donates Billions to Gates Foundation

Buffett Donates Billions to Gates Foundation

There is a lot to be said about Warren Buffett's announcement that most of his billions-of-dollars fortune will be given to charities, with particular focus on giving about $31 billion to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. And we hope his actions, as well as those of the Gateses, reverbate through billionaire and millionaire circles, because giving back to the world that made them rich makes sense - tax incentives or no. For instance, when Ted Turner donated $1 billion to the U.N. in stock, he said, "When I got my statement in January. I was worth $2.2 billion. Then I got another statement in August that said I was worth $3.2 billion. So I figure its only nine months' earnings, who cares?" more ›

The West Side Railyard Follies

The West Side Railyard Follies

It's seems that the Trans Gas president, Adam Victor, has had problems with Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff, who is one of the architects of not only the Jets West Side Stadium deal but the NYC 2012 Olympics bid, too, but Victor says this bid is not revenge. Oh, please, Gothamist has heard that one before. There are a couple problematic things with this bid: It doesn't really address a need for residential living (which the Jets and Cablevision bid purport to do) and the design looks like some bad modernist rendering of Coney Island. If this rendering from Philip Johnson/Alan Ritchie Architects is any indication, apparently power plants of the future will look like Gymboree play areas. more ›

Sassaing Up Friendster

Sassaing Up Friendster

Sassa worked for Ted Turner, so he's certainly familiar with manic personalities that will be Friendstering him now - he's user 6,724,953! And just out of curiosity, how many people out there check Friendster on a daily basis? These days, Gothamist seems to use it to see if the random, unwitting names du jour, like the girl who crapped her pants at the Fox upfront, are on Friendster. more ›

The Apprentice

The Apprentice

The Times looks at the beautiful partnership that is reality TV guru Mark Burnett (a former nanny too!) and Donald Trump, what with the reality show, The Apprentice, about aspiring moguls vying for a job with the Donald on deck. The most amusing part was research that compared the Donald with celebrity entrpreneurs: "Mr. Trump was considered less appealing to see in a reality show than Oprah Winfrey or Ted Turner, but more engaging than P. Diddy or Martha Stewart." more ›

Rupert Murdoch is Evil

Rupert Murdoch is Evil

Gothamist can't wait to see the new ads that basically paint Rupert Murdoch as the media tyrant we know he is. Created by MoveOn.org, the ads try to inform the American public about Rupert's evil plans to take over the world, by way of his Death Star, News Corporation, as the FCC may be relaxing media ownership rules. more ›

Southern Comfort, Yankee Style

A Confederate Flag in Central Park; AP Photo
To promote the Civil War film, Gods and Generals, Warner Bros. staged a re-enactment of a battle in Central Park on Wednesday. The publicity department didn't factor in Mother Nature's decision to dump 20 inches of snow, but that didn't deter the hearty from participating. The film is the first from Ted Turner, who apparently put his own money (a reported $100 million) into the film, as the Civil War is a personal hobby and he gets to say the film is from "Ted Turner Films." That's tiny compared to $1 billion he pledged to the U.N. in 1997, but wasn't that in Time Warner stock? Hmm. Since then, Ted Turner has lost billions. Well, Ted, hate to break it to you, but I don't think you'll be seeing money from the film until ancillary: Review of Gods and Generals. Look at more pictures of the publicity stunt in Central Park. more ›

Holy majoly 2. This seems

Holy majoly 2. This seems like a Ted Turner type move...but I happen to agree with Lewis' attitude...being 144% overbudget and expecting people to automatically pay for it is definitely arrogant. School Learns Cost of a Gift-Giver's Anger more ›
