NYC's Best High Teas To Celebrate The Return Of Downton Abbey
On Sunday night, PBS will begin airing the second season of the greatest British Upstairs/Downstairs drama of our time, Downton Abbey. There will be war! And intrigue! And Maggie Smith! And manners! So what better way to celebrate then with a nice proper cup of afternoon tea on Sunday before settling in to check in on the Crawley crew and their (mostly) devoted staff. To that end, here are five spots—some fancy, some less so— that probably wouldn't upset the Dowager Countess of Grantham.
All Aboard The Nostalgia Train, Leaving The 2nd Avenue Station Tomorrow!
Move over vintage buses, we're back on to our vintage train obsession for the weekend. Tomorrow is the annual Vintage Tea & Swing Dancing Party aboard a vintage subway train, hosted once again by Levys' Unique New York. The free (aside from your MetroCard swipe) event takes place tomorrow from noon to 4 p.m., and all interested parties should meet on the 2nd Avenue station's uptown F platform. Popular Montreal Tea Company DAVIDsTEA Opens First U.S. Location In NYC
Tea: it's not just the beverage of choice for ex-girlfriends when they want to get together and discuss how you screwed up the relationship. It's also great for seasons such as winter, when it is (sometimes) cold, and also when you realize all the coffee is making you sweat excessively and giving you hemorrhoids. If you're a fan of this healthy, restorative beverage, you'll be excited to know that the Montreal-based company DAVIDsTEA has opened its first location in America right here in New York City. The first of two shops just opened on the Upper East Side, with a West Village spot to follow. They have a ton of "fun" organic tea blends, and, speaking of ex-girlfriends, they're all loose!
Study: Most Honey Is Just Fake, Pollenless Goo
That stuff your squeezed into your Earl Grey or dunked your McNugget in or bought with that French maid costume for "personal reasons" may not actually be honey. FDA regulations require any product labeled "honey" to contain pollenthe naturally occurring ingredient that gives honey nutritional benefits. But a recent study conducted by Food Safety News shows that 76% of honey on the shelves contains no pollen. Why would producers remove all the pollen? Honey laundering.
Century-Old Coffee, Tea Purveyor M. Rohrs Still Lives On Online
M. Rohrs House of Fine Teas & Coffees, which was regarded by some as the best coffee on the Upper East Side, closed last week. Owner Donald Wright, who took over the business 15 years ago, told DNAinfo that "increasing rent and regulations, a tough economy and the negative impact of the Second Avenue subway construction" forced him to fold. And it seems the $12 they started charging customers to plug in their laptops couldn't make ends meet. But the Internet is both a blessing and a curse; today owner Donald Wright tells us he's actually not out of business after all:
Traffic Enforcement Agent Brutally Beaten by Driver
Yesterday morning around 9 a.m. traffic agent Edgar Saeteros, 35, approached a double-parked Mercury in the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx. Within minutes he was on his back, "out cold" with a fractured skull, and police are on the lookout for the driver. It shouldn't take too long to track the guy down, however, because the genius fled on foot, leaving his car behind.
Become a Meter Maid and Park For Free!
In what must be a recruitment attempt from the NYPD, the Post reports that traffic agents in the Westchester Square neighborhood of The Bronx can park their cars for free. The department allows two traffic agents per shift to stand at the corner of St. Raymond and East Tremont avenues, making sure nobody touches their colleague's cars—even if the two-hour parking meters have run out.
Mom Sues Starbucks Over Infant-Scalding Tea
Same as it ever was. A Brooklyn mom is suing Starbucks, claiming "improperly served" hot tea caused her to drop the beverage onto her 5-month-old son, causing him serious injuries.
Fired Cop Blames Failed Drug Test On Cup Of Coca Tea
A rookie cop is suing to be reinstated to the NYPD after he was fired in March for testing positive for cocaine. Alvaro Casado insists he's no coke fiend, he just made the mistake of drinking a cup of Mate de Coca tea the night before he was tested. The South American tea is made from coca leaves and has been known to show up on drug screenings; one study found an average of 4.14 mg of cocaine in a cup of Peruvian coca tea. (No caffeine, though!)
"Vintage Tea Party" Headed To The V Train On Sunday
A group of costume-clad commuters will turn a subway ride into a subterranean soiree. The tour guides from Levys' Unique New York will host a free, unsanctioned "Vintage Tea Party" on an antique subway train where costumed straphangers can sip tea, dine on dainty cookies, and enjoy "everything else you'd expect from a late-19th century parlor-room drama," according to organizers.
