Earlier today Governor Cuomo along with Republican Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver hammered out an agreement to that representing "the first major restructuring of the tax code in decades resulting in a tax cut for 4.4 million middle class New Yorkers taxpayers." In a release [pdf], Governor Cuomo says, "We are cutting taxes on middle class New Yorkers and small businesses…This would be lowest tax rate for middle class families in 58 years." If you were excited that the proposed payroll tax cut (which is getting a test vote later today) would put a little extra money in your pocket next year, the Daily News has some bad news: the $67 to $178 a month you'll be saving will just go to things like fare hikes and parking meters. And though you would be left even more broke without the tax cuts, people are still complaining. One financial planner said, "It sounds like you'll be able to live a better life—but when you work it out, it doesn't create any new disposable income." more ›

Jack Kemp, a star quarterback on the Buffalo Bills in the 1960s who later became a Republican congressman, died last night at 73 in his Maryland home. His family said, "During the treatment of his cancer, Jack expressed his gratitude for the thoughts and prayers of so many friends, a gratitude which the Kemp family shares." While Kemp's football career was impressive, the NY Times reports, "His greatest legacy may stem from his years as a congressman from Buffalo, especially 1978, when his argument for sharp tax cuts to promote economic growth became party policy, one that has endured to this day." Kemp was also an advocate for the Republican party to include more minorities; noting how many of his teammates were black, he told friends, "I can’t help but care about the rights of the people I used to shower with." Kemp, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1988, was housing secretary under George H.W. Bush and was Bob Dole's running mate in the 1996 election. more ›
