How many more times are we going to have to suffer through Tanyon Sturtze coming out of the bullpen? This is a guy who couldn’t cut it as a Devil Ray and now the Yankees view him as a key member of their bullpen? Since he became a Yankee in 2004, he has had two months where his ERA has been below 4, yet they keep trotting him out there, it’s infuriating.
Yanks Sweep Through Texas
Randy Gets Rocked
Staked to a four-run lead, Randy Johnson couldn’t even make it out of the fourth inning as he imploded in grand fashion and the Yankees lost to Toronto last night 10-5. Perhaps it is merely a coincidence, but Johnson left his last start because of tightness and this performance will only increase the questions about his health.
Mauling the Moose
Things were looking good for the Yankees, up 4-0 through four innings with Mike Mussina dominating the Indians. Then everything changed, as Mussina couldn’t find the plate and the Indians started hitting. When the fifth inning had ended, Cleveland had scored six times and cruised to a 7-4 victory Wednesday night.
Back to First
Monday’s game was a microcosm of the Yankees’ season, not pretty but ultimately effective. It took them almost four hours, but in the end the Yankees outlasted the Rangers 11-10. As a result, the Yankees are back in first place for the first time since April.
The Taxman Cometh
The game wasn’t all good news for the Yankees. Both Ruben Sierra and Bernie Williams had to leave with injuries and while Williams’ injury appears to be minor, Sierra could be out for an indefinite period of time. The Yankees have already sent Tanyon Sturtze to the disabled list this week and will hope to avoid having to sending another player.
Yankees Spring to First
Every Yankee starter contributed a hit or an RBI in the victory and Tanyon Sturtze added two innings of spotless relief while the outcome was still in question. Tom Gordon pitched into and out of trouble in the ninth to close the door on the Red Sox. The Yankees took the lead in the third inning when Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui drove in runs and David Wells balked in one. Matsui added a two-run homer in the eighth to pad the Yankee lead.
Yankees Start Spring with a ... Tie?
In his three trips to the plate as the Yankees DH, Giambi went 0-1 with 2 walks. While the Pirates were batting, Giambi spent his time in the clubhouse practicing his swing. The televisions inside were broadcasting the game and at one point, the commentators discussed Giambi's situation, which caused everyone to pay attention.
Yankees Win in Extra Innings to Even Series
In the 7th inning, the Yankees had a two run lead, with Tom Gordon relieving Jon Lieber. In the 8th, however, the Yankee bullpen unraveled ever so slightly, allowing the Twins to tie the game. Mariano Rivera relieved Gordon and promptly blew the save, allowing two inherited runners to score. It could have been worse for the Yankees though. Corey Koskey doubled to left, but the ball bounced over the wall, preventing the go ahead run from scoring. As it was, the score remained tied at five a piece.
Browned Out in Texas
Kevin Brown returned to the place where he broke in to the major leagues, but he was not welcomed back kindly. The Texas Rangers tagged him for five runs (four earned) in only five innings. Hopefully it was just a poor outing and not a step back for Kevin Brown. Brown's counterpart, Ryan Drese, managed to hold the Yankees to five hits over seven innings and zero runs. The Rangers held on for a 7-1 victory.
Contreras Bad, Yanks Stymied
Ponson was the story of the night. After the first two innings, Ponson retired 16 straight batters. Matsui broke the streak with a single in the 8th inning. The Yankees could only muster 4 hits off of Ponson as he pitched a complete game. Jose Contreras on the other hand was doomed by one bad inning. He was pitching on three days' rest.
Devil Rays Outlast Yankees
Alex Graman got the start due to injuries to Mike Mussina and Kevin Brown. Graman was unimpressive to say the least. He lasted only one-third of an inning. He allowed five hits and five earned runs. Tanyon Sturtze was called on to stop the bleeding, and he did for fur innings. Keeping the Yankees in the game. In the top of the fifth inning, the Yankees managed to tie the game at 5-5. Sturtze then faltered allowing the Devil Rays to take back the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. It was too much for the Yankees to overcome, losing 9-7.
Moose Mauled by Tigers
Mussina gave up seven runs in six innings. In Mussina's last two starts, against the Mets and Tigers, he is 0-2 with a 9.82 ERA. In the two games against the Devil Rays, he is 0-2 with an ERA of 11.00. Not really the numbers of an ace, are they? Last night the tigers were able to run away with the game and win 9-1. Jason Johnson pitched 8 strong innings to move his record to 6-7, allowing one run on six hits.
Brown and Mussina Out but Yanks Keep Rolling
Two games later, Mike Mussina injured his groin and was pulled after three innings. It looks like Mussina is only going to miss one start and should be back on the mound on Tuesday to face the Baltimore Orioles, his former team. So with two of the five starters out of the rotation where does that leave the Bombers?
