A reader sent us this glimpse of the scene by NYU's Gallatin school and writes, "There are like 10-15 cops just standing at the corner and across the street because Take Back NYU"—of the Kimmel Center takeover—"is protesting again...against tuition hikes." NYU Local has more details: "The Gallatin Open House was briefly interrupted tonight when a group of about 15 TBNYU! protesters started pounding on the newly renovated building’s windows. This prompted an NYU administrator, the same one who busted through the Kimmel barricade, to dash outside and squelch. He told them he would have the NYPD remove them if they continued. They stopped." Take Back NYU notes there's a roundtable discussion about having a socially responsible finance committee at the school tomorrow.
Always Be Protesting: Take Back NYU's Mini Protest
Monday Morning NYU Protest Quarterback
NYU Local printed one student's thoughts on what the seven tactical errors Take Back NYU! made during its occupation/protest last week. Some of the errors: "They made too many demands at one time," asking for "amnesty for all involved was a mistake" especially as the first demand (it "should not have even made it onto the list") and less-than-optimal communication with supporters on the outside—"the topless antics of the two female protestors lost them quite a bit of credibility early on, because people were willing and more than able to write off the occupation as an amateurish stunt without a proper center of power." Take Back NYU! co-organizer Emily Stainkampf, who was suspended, appreciated the criticisms, "Some of these critiques are misinformed, but the overall levelheadedness and fairness with which they have been written warms my heart."
Take Back NYU! Taking Their Message Around the Globe
With their three-day occupation of the Kimmel Center now in hindsight and eighteen of their members possibly facing suspension, Take Back NYU! is attempting not to lose momentum and forge ahead. Today they posted the above picture sent in from a student group at Loyola University in Chicago. And yesterday it was the famous activist and scholar Noam Chomsky expressing solidarity with the group. Chomsky released a statement supporting their call for "universities to end their participation in the brutal oppression of Palestinians."
NYU Protest Goes Out With a Whimper
The final results of the three-day protest inside the NYU Kimmel Center are two students arrested, 18 more suspended, no demands met for the protesting group Take Back NYU! and several leftover buckets of unused kitty litter. NYU spokesman James Devitt told reporters, "We offered them a dialogue a couple of times, and they rejected it both times, and then we moved ahead in this regard."
NYU Student Occupation Continues: They're "Not Gonna Take It"
After over 24 hours of occupying the student center (which started Wednesday night), NYU students part of "Take Back NYU" continue to occupy the Kimmel Center, hoping the administration will meet their demands. The demands begin with "Full legal and disciplinary amnesty for all parties involved in the occupation" and "Full compensation for all employees whose jobs were disrupted during the course of the occupation." and also include "Public release of NYU’s annual operating budget, including a full list of university expenditure," "Disclosure of NYU’s endowment holdings," and "annual scholarships be provided for thirteen Palestinian student." There's also something for non-NYU folks: "The general public have access to Bobst Library."
