Man Injured After Explosion Levels Long Island Home

Yesterday afternoon, an explosion ripped apart a home in Syosset, injuring a 48-year-old guidance counselor. According to Newsday, owner Brian Welsh was "found dazed, badly hurt and speaking incoherently on the front lawn." Fire officials said the roof and floor collapsed and the walls caved in; it's believed the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak. more ›

Another Day, Another Drunken Drag Race Fatality

On Monday, two people died and others were critically injured in two separate crashes in Brooklyn and Queens that were believed to be the result of drag racing. (Yesterday the driver in the Brooklyn crash, 23-year-old Anel Kolenovic, was charged with criminal negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and disobeying a red light.) And on Sunday, Bronx landscaper Everardo Nieto allegedly killed an 86-year-old Long Island man when Nieto veered into oncoming traffic during a drag race. In an accident that briefly shut down service between Hicksville and Huntington yesterday afternoon, a Syosset Taxi driver crashed his cab through a fence and onto the third rail of LIRR tracks near Jackson Avenue. Nanny's Death Investigated, Questioned

Long Island police continue to investigate the death of a nanny who jumped into pool to save one of her charges in Syosset, Nassau County. Ana Maria Montano de Gimenez could not swim and appeared to die of a heart attack; her employer, Rubian Saunders, had heard her screams but could only manage to pull out her 3-year-old son, who was revived and is being monitored at a hospital. Still, Gimenez's family and friends want answers. Nanny Dies While Trying to Save Drowning Boy

A nanny in Syosset, Long Island died after jumping into a backyard pool when her 3-year-old charge was struggling in the water. Nassau police spokesman Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone said the boy had been wearing a life vest, but "It's possible that the 3-year-old child removed his jacket and got into the pool." more ›
