Earlier this morning, a two-alarm fire ravaged a Bronx two-family home, killing a 36-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy. The blaze, which was called "possibly suspicious," occurred on Prospect Avenue in the Belmont section around 3:30 a.m. The FDNY said, "There were heavy fire conditions on both the second and third floors of a three-story brownstone. When we arrived, numerous people on the street were screaming." And another city official said the building was illegally occupied.

Yesterday, a fast-moving fire in a Brooklyn home claimed the lives of a 62-year-old man and his two daughters, 14 and 3. The blaze, which started around 5:30 p.m. on Putnam Avenue in Bushwick, is considered suspicious and WABC 7 reports, "Investigators believe it may have been started by kids playing with matches in a stairwell. Investigators are unsure if it was set intentionally or if it was just horseplay that spiraled out of control."
"Suspicious" Sunset Park Fire Injures Dozens
A three-alarm fire in an apartment building on 61st Street in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood forced dozens of residents out of their homes early this morning. The fire, which was reported at 5:12 a.m., injured four people critically and at least 31 others also suffered injuries.
1 Dead, 7 Injured In "Suspicious" Bronx Fire
The body of a 46-year-old man was found in the stairwell of a Bronx apartment building where a fire broke out last night. The blaze, which the Fire Department deems "suspicious", either started in the lobby or on the top floor of the five-story structure at 169th Street and the Grand Concourse in the Mount Eden section. A resident who managed to get out said, "It was like hell -- fire and smoke and people screaming everywhere."
FDNY Investigates Suspicious SI Brush Fires
After two straight days of brush fires breaking out on Staten Island, the Fire Department is looking into whether the fires were set on purpose. on Friday, there were several fires in Oakwood Beach and yesterday, there were fires in Ocean Breeze, New Corp Beach, Midland Beach and South Beach, where there was a four-alarm fire. No civilians were injured (one firefighter was injured) and no homes were damaged. Deputy Chief Roger Sakowich said of yesterday's blazes, "If they were closer together we would have said there was a good chance it could have jumped. This area, it was a very large area, and it leads us to believe it was possibly suspicious."
Woman Burned In Fire Was Told To "Sleep With One Eye Open"
Yesterday morning, firefighters responded to a suspicious fire in a two-story house in the West Farms section of the Bronx which left eight people injured, including a 22 -year-old woman and her 2-year-old son who were found unconscious in a basement apartment. Now it turns out the woman was being threatened by a former tenant, who allegedly sent a text message saying the victim "better sleep with one eye open."
Bed-Stuy Fire Deemed Suspicous
Yesterday morning just before 4:30 a.m., a fire broke out in a brownstone on Putnam Aveue in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. Nine civilians, plus four firefighters (including one whose face was burned), were injured and fire officials say the fire was "suspicious."
Bronx Fire Guts Stores, Leaves 18 Homeless
Late last night, a three-alarm fire ravaged a row of stores in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx. According to WCBS 2, "The fire started at 3941 White Plains Road just before 11 p.m. One man who say the flames as he was driving by started honking his horn to get people who lived above the stores quickly out." He said, "I saw the flames coming up on the top left corner of the house. So I actually started honking my horn, and then other people joined in, actually honking their horns as well. So them doing that actually got a couple of people out of there."
Five Alarm Brooklyn Warehouse Fire Burning For Over 14 Hours
Just after 6:15 p.m. last night, a fire broke out in a Bushwick warehouse, at Evergreen and Pilling. The smoke was so intense near the Wilson subway station that it suspended L train service between Myrtle-Wyckoff and Broadway Junction—regular L service resumed at 5:15 a.m., but trains are bypassing the Bushwick Ave - Aberdeen St station in both directions at this time, so expect some delays. The fire is still burning this morning; according to MyFoxNY, the "two-story cabinet warehouse loaded with wood and cardboard. Fire officials say the cabinent-making materials were making it difficult to fight the fire."
Fire Hits Commercial Buildings in Flushing
Early this morning, WABC 7 reports that a "suspicious" two-alarm fire "tore through six businesses" in Queens this morning--in the Flushing section, on Roosevelt Avenue near Main Street. Heavy winds may have also helped spread the fire, which firefighters reportedly tried to battle from the inside of the stores (three suffered minor injuries). Additionally, "water used battling the blaze collected on the track of the nearby No. 7 subway line," which has caused some delays on the 7--and the fire has caused some rerouting of MTA buses--check the NYC Transit site's Service Alert site.
