NYPD Begins Videotaping Interrogations
Over a year ago, the NYPD announced that it would soon begin videotaping interrogations, despite the reluctance of many cops. Now, after an eight-month survey, that pilot program has finally begun: on Wednesday, interrogations started being videotaped in the 48th Precinct, which covers East Tremont and Fordham in the Bronx, and in the 67th Precinct, which covers East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Eight Subway Shooting Suspects Wearing Orange Jackets
Early this morning a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot at the southbound 2 train platform at the West Farms Square/East Tremont Ave stop, and police pulled at least 12 men from the platform for questioning. Police say the victim was shot in the chest around 1:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Barnabas Hospital. Oddly, of the 12 men pulled for questioning, the Daily News reports that "about eight of them wore similar orange puffy jackets." We're not sure if that's some sign of violence, or if eight people in the Bronx just had really bad fashion taste.
90-Year-Old Mugging Victim Wants Attackers To Pay
Yesterday, the police released surveillance video images of two men suspected of attacking and robbing a 90-year-old man in his Harlem apartment building earlier this month. The victim, Jesse Little, has been speaking out, discussing the crime, "One of them put an arm around my neck and pulled me to the ground. The other guy took the money from my pocket," and making his feelings known, "I want to put ‘em in jail for life. That’s what I want. I wish I had a gun. I’d blow their brains out."
Drug Slingers Caught On Google Street View
How can you tell when you've been slinging drugs for too long on the same corner? When police are able to use Google Maps to identify you. NYPD set up a sting on a drug crew working near the Cooper Park Houses in East Williamsburg yesterday, busting seven dealers including three whose faces were captured in the Google street view. And the police did so in the guise of hipsters. "They were catering to the hipster crowd, among other customers," one law-enforcement source told the Post.
Suspect In Anti-Gay Attacks Makes Bail, 11th Suspect Arrested
One of the suspects in the brutal attacks on three men—allegedly prompted by their sexuality—made bail as another one was arrested. In the meantime, the alleged gang leader said in a jailhouse interview, "I don't have anything against homosexuals. I'm not a monster," and argued he couldn't be involved, since he recently got out of jail.
Suspects In Central Park Sexual Assault To Be Released
The three 18-year-old and one 25-year-old arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Central Park early Sunday morning were released today. The Post reports, "To the frustration of cops and prosecutors, four young sex suspects are going free in the coming days -- because the women they're accused of attacking have emotional or drug issues too severe for them to testify credibly."
Police Seek Suspects In Central Park Sexual Assault
Police released surveillance video that shows three men believed to be suspects in the sexual assault of a woman in Central Park early Sunday morning. The victim, 23, was near the crosstown bus stop at East 86th Street and Fifth Avenue around 3 a.m. when, according to the Daily News, "The men offered to walk her through the park." Police Commissioner Kelly said, "She was taken into Central Park, where she was attacked."
Family, Cops Keep Vigil For Injured Police Officer
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that the 31-year-old police officer who was struck by a motorcycle while chasing stolen car suspects in Bensonhurst is "still in extremely critical condition... The situation has not changed." Carlos Olmedo, a four-year veteran of the force and father of three, suffered serious brain injuries since being hit on Sunday, and his family and colleagues have been keeping a bedside vigil at the hospital. Kelly added, "He's a terrific young police officer and was extremely well respected. This underscores the dangers of the job."
Suspect Arrested in Subway Stabbing
Three men are in police custody today in connection with the Sunday morning fight on a No. 2 train that left two men fatally stabbed and another injured. Sources tell ABC that during questioning by detectives, one of the men implicated himself in the stabbings and has been arrested at the 6th precinct station house. Speaking to City Room, NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne declined to provide any information on "how we identified these individuals."
Attack On Mexican Laborer Being Investigated As Hate Crime
A Mexican day laborer is hospitalized with brain damage after being attacked somewhere in Williamsburg or Bushwick by three black men shouting "wetback." Mario Vera was riding his bike back home to Bushwick with groceries from a lower Manhattan food pantry when the young men hit him in the back of his head "with something hard" while yelling anti-immigrant slurs. The assault happened on September 23rd, but wasn't reported until last Friday, because Vera is an undocumented immigrant afraid to go to the police. (NYPD policy prohibits officers from sharing law-abiding immigrants' status with the Feds, but it has been known to happen.)
Police Search For 2nd Hate Crime Suspect, Quinn Condemns Attack
Police have identified the second suspect in the savage beating of an openly gay Queens man who is still in grave condition after the Friday morning attack. On Sunday police arrested 26-year-old Daniel Aleman and charged him with assault and aggravated assault as a hate crime; they say the second assailant is Daniel Rodriguez, 21, of College Point, Queens. The victim, 49-year-old Jack Price, was leaving a 24-hour deli in College Point around 3 a.m. Friday when he was attacked by two men who allegedly screamed anti-gay slurs during the assault. He's in a medically-induced coma.
Hofstra Student Made Up Horrible Rape Story, "Suspects" Released
Whoa: The Hofstra student who claimed five men had gang raped her in a dormitory bathroom stall—resulting in four suspects being arrested and a manhunt for the fifth—apparently lied about the story. Newsday reports, "After hearing the news, prosecutors convened a late night court hearing at First District Court in Hempstead where Judge Robert Bruno signed an order dismissing the charges against the four men in the case."
Arrest of Mugging Suspects in West Village "Very Dramatic"
More details on the two suspects arrested Monday night in connection with a series of violent muggings in the West Village: the Post, in an article headlined "Village Vermin Busted," hears from an anonymous source in the NYPD, who says cops spotted them "lurking in the shadows of a building. Something was not right. They took off immediately." A witness describes the high-profile bust: "Two cop cars pulled up and other cops were running down the middle of street. The cop cars screeched up to the intersection. It was very dramatic. Neighbors even stuck their heads out their windows to watch. They were saying, 'Did they get them? Did they get them?'" And one of the suspects, 21-year-old Adam Temple of Crown Heights, allegedly tossed a 9 mm pistol aside before being tackled. The Post says he was later found with a stolen credit card.
Multiple Suspects Sought in UWS Robberies
The police are looking for 10 teenagers suspected in at least six robberies in Riverside Park and on Riverside Drive. WNBC reports that two to 10 suspects, black males ranging in age from 13 to 17 years old, have been involved in each robbery. The most recent one was on Wednesday where "10 men assaulted a 28-year-old man in Riverside Park and stole his back pack," and there was another a few weeks ago where they "threw a stick in the wheel of a 26-year-old man's bicycle, causing the victim to fall off the bicycle" (then they assaulted and robbed him). Update: Via WABC 7, a list of the robberies and locations here.
