Susan Sarandon Calls Pope A Nazi, Gets Grief

Susan Sarandon Calls Pope A Nazi, Gets Grief

Damnit Janet! Susan Sarandon is getting some heat for referring to the current pope as a Nazi (and then repeating it) in an offhand remark while talking about her movie 1995 Dead Man Walking on Saturday in the Hamptons. Seems that back then Sarandon sent a copy of the book the movie was based on to the pope. "The last one," she clarified, "not this Nazi one we have now." When her interviewer, Bob Balaban, gently tut-tutted she didn't back down and just repeated the remark. And now of course the Catholic League is furious! more ›

A few weeks ago, we heard about the High Line's plan to open a temporary roller rink under the newly opened Phase II of the park, and yesterday, the rink became reality, with a little help from kids from the Hudson Guild, professional skaters from the Central Park Dance Skaters Association, the Gotham Girls Roller Derby, and, of course, Susan Sarandon. Photographer Katie Sokoler was on hand to capture the rolling good time (forgive us)...until disaster struck: more ›

Toothless Bartender Challenges Susan Sarandon To Ping Pong For Teeth

Toothless Bartender Challenges Susan Sarandon To Ping Pong For Teeth

In one of the more bizarre, if endearing, fundraisers we've heard of, a Red Hook bartender is planning a 15-hour marathon ping pong tournament next Saturday to raise money for his much-needed dental work (the result of a car accident several years ago). And not only is bartender Jamie, whose lack of teeth hasn't held him back from a rigorous ping pong training schedule, playing nonstop at B61 Bar from 1 p.m. to 4 a.m., but he is challenging well-documented tabletop doyenne Susan Sarandon to a match as well. more ›

Susan Sarandon a Vomit Victim at the Box

Susan Sarandon a Vomit Victim at the Box

Not only does Susan Sarandon have an Oscar, she knows how to be vommed on with grace. The star, who recently parted ways with Tim Robbins and who’s been seen around town with a ping-pong club proprietor some thirty years her junior, was spotted last night at a third anniversary party for The Box burlesque in NoHo. According to the Post Sarandon was seated in a precarious place near the stage when transsexual entertainer Rose Wood threw up directly on her. One witness said she was calm about it and even seemed to be enjoying herself: "She was laughing while a bunch of guys came over to towel her off," said the partygoer. more ›

Video: Susan Sarandon Spanked A Pig-Man

This week Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon took on a new role, and showed everyone just how young 63 can look. She's already rumored to be dating a 31-year-old ping pong champ, and last night she got onstage with Of Montreal at the Highline Ballroom... where she spanked a man in a body stocking and pig mask with a ruler. more ›

Did Ping Pong Romance Spike Sarandon's Relationship With Robbins?

The co-owner of a big newish ping pong club on 23rd Street has been having an affair with Susan Sarandon, sources told Page Six and Gawker several weeks ago. As you may know, a publicist for Sarandon announced yesterday that Sarandon "and her partner of 23 years, actor Tim Robbins, have announced that they separated over the summer." Sarandon is a financial backer in ping pong club SPiN New York, and rumor has it that 31-year-old co-owner Jonathan Bricklin is her lover. more ›

Simmons and Sarandon Meet the Couch Potatoes

To kick off the weekend, Richard Simmons visited the team of folks participating in the movie-watching marathon (check out Crazy Legs Conti!). Simmons served up some "heart-healthy energy foods" and taught them how to do exercises while seated in their lounge chairs. Since Thursday the eight contestants have been slackin' off and watching flicks in an attempt to break a world record, and take home some cash. more ›

Manilow Refuses to be Hassled by Hasselbeck

Barry Manilow, who is out promoting his Greatest Songs of the Seventies, has refused to share a stage with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who was barely walking in the 70s. The crooner left a little message on his website yesterday for his fans letting them know he wouldn't be on The View today, saying "I had made a request that I be interviewed by Joy, Barbara or Whoopi, but not Elisabeth Hasselback. Unfortunately, the show was not willing to accommodate this simple request so I bowed out. It’s really too bad because I've always been a big supporter of the show, but I cannot compromise my beliefs." more ›

Romance and Cigarettes Finally Lights Up

Romance and Cigarettes Finally Lights Up

Hear about that movie Romance and Cigarettes that premiered last night? You know, the one directed by John Turturro, starring Chris Walken, James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Steve Buscemi, Kate Winslet, Mary Louise-Parker, Bobby Cannavale, Mandy Moore, Elaine Stritch and Amy Sedaris? Well, don’t feel bad if you didn't – that fact that two years since it wrapped the film’s been released all over the world except the town where it was shot speaks volumes about the Hollywood distribution system. more ›

Coffee Shop's Menu: Celebrities

Coffee Shop's Menu: Celebrities

Coffee Shop was closed for a few days when the Department of Health tallied up 102 points of violations - 28 or more requires a closure - at the restaurant, finding "Cooked or prepared food is cross-contaminated" and issues with plumbing among the concerns. The Union Square eatery posted a snippy sign explaining the closing, and owner Charles Milite went to the NY Times and said Coffee Shop was "caught in the cross hairs of this unfortunate Taco Bell Situation," since Coffee Shop had operated for 17 years without incident. And he promised the restaurant would reopen yesterday. more ›

Spitzer, Clinton, Spencer, and Cuomo Win State Primaries

Spitzer, Clinton, Spencer, and Cuomo Win State Primaries

With just 55 days left, the dance cards are set for the general election. As expected, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and Senator Hillary Clinton won their respectives primaries for governor and Senate. The NY Times noted that Clinton's reosounding win showed that her support of the Iraq war did not affect voter sentiment:

“Clinton’s work ethic, her lack of enemies, and her fund-raising help for other Democrats have insulated her from party criticism, including on Iraq,” said Ken Sherrill, a political scientist at Hunter College. “I got a taped phone call from Susan Sarandon urging support for Tasini, but that’s all I really heard about him.”
On the Republican side of the Senate race, former Yonkers mayor John Spencer won the nomination. Given the mess the Republican Senate nominees are in, it's safe to say Clinton has it in the bag. Next up for Spitzer, though, is facing a campaign from Republican John Faso, who Spitzer leads 67% to Faso's 21% in a Marist poll. more ›

Golden Globes Commentary 2004

Golden Globes Commentary 2004

If it involves movies or television, Gothamist is interested. And if it's the tiniest bit related to the Oscars, then we're all over it. That's why Gothamist has produced a Golden Globes commentary similar to our Oscar commentary from last year. Yes, awards shows are self-congratulatory and ridiculous, and the Golden Globes are not a reliable predictor of the Oscars (which aren't that great anyway but their usefulness as a marketing tool cannot be denied), but it's just become a part of our DNA to enjoy an evening of watching, wondering, and whining. more ›

The Party's Over - Tonight

Tonight, the 92nd Street Y has a screening of the documentary, The Party's Over, which follows Philip Seymour Hoffman as he looks inside the political process during the 2000 Republican and Democratic conventions, with a post-screening question & answer session with Hoffman as well. The film was directed by Donovan Leitch and Rebecca Chaiklin, (produced by Robert Downey Sr., Stanley Buchtal, Robert Downey Jr. and Leitch) and features Susan Sarandon, Bonnie Raitt, Eddie Vedder, Noam Chomsky, Willie Nelson, Newt Gingrich and Courtney Love among various artists, activists, and politicans interviewed. more ›

Best Sports Movies

Best Sports Movies

With last week's release of Seabiscuit, the Palm Beach Post's sports writers come up a list of the best sports movies ever made. Not surprisingly, the list skews towards more recent films, but Gothamist was surprised to see how much we agreed with the selections. We were especially glad that Hoop Dreams, one of the best films ever made, period, made the list, thereby not getting the short shrift for being a documentary. The top ten: more ›
