Another over-the-top Coney Island development proposal is in the works. Mayor Bloomberg unveiled a plan today to build the nation's biggest urban amusement park there, including 4,500 residential units (20 percent are set-asides for low- and middle-income housing) and some retail establishments. The proposal basically spells doom for Thor Equities' $1.5 million Vegas-style entertainment complex that can only get built if the city provides zoning for it. Don't worry, the Cyclone isn't going anywhere....

Supporters of Astroland will be gathering tomorrow at the Surf Ave. entrance of Astroland in a rally to save the boardwalk amusement park from shuttering for good. Sunday is the last day of the season for the park and unless Thor Equities extends its lease for another year, Astroland will be closing for good. One supporter recommend showing up early and will be providing foamboard and markers to make signs. PDF posters for printing can be found here. Colorful outfits are recommended, as it is a celebration in hope of Astroland's continued existence rather than a wake or a funeral. An online petition to save the park can be signed here. Performers at tomorrow's rally will include Mariachi Real de Mexico at 4pm and The Hungry March Band at 6pm.

Sitting 800 yards off the southern tip of Manhattan and about 400 from the Brooklyn waterfront, it isn't often you can get a view of the city and a house like that one to the right all from the same place.

• A number of Brooklyn kennels, centered around Park Slope, are experiencing an outbreak of a dog-cough virus that makes canines sound like they are cats coughing up hairballs. That is just humiliating.
• A dealer at a used car lot in Champlain, NY heard one of his Pontiac's engines purring and it took a number of mechanics to retrieve the now-adopted black cat named Motor Oil from under the hood. WNBC has fantastic footage regarding the story.
• Marcos Diaz successfully completed his 60-mile, twice-around-Manhattan swim yesterday after approximately 22 hours. The feat of endurance was accomplished to raise funds for Dominican kids suffering from leukemia.
• A Staten Island woman was awarded $135,000 by her daughter's insurance company after she was attacked by a deer. A mounted deer-head trophy fell off the wall as the babysitting grandmother was retrieving a safety gate in the garage for her grandkids and received a large gash on the side of her head.

THEATER: With his zany imagination and distinctive bass-baritone voice, Joseph Keckler (myspace) has been generating buzz throughout the gooey honeycomb of the downtown performance art cabaret scene. Tonight he sprinkles his particular blend of whimsical catnip at Dixon Place with Cat Lady, in which a man re-enacts an ordinary day with his mother, who runs a community theater with cat actors out of her home. “Past lives are recalled, songs are sung, and finally a trip to the vet's is made in this comedic and dark exploration of the relationship between art and trauma.” Part of the HOT! • Longtime area attraction at Rye Playland may never reopen.
• Remember searching for the prize in a cereal box? Cops found $100,000 stuffed in a box of Cap'n Cunch when they raided a Washington Heights heroin distribution center. They also found $12 million in drugs.
• City schools are operating with the assistance of lots of cash from private organizations and individuals.
• Aides to Governor Spitzer are fully aware of his anger management problems. He sees it as a problem-solving tool.
• Native Americans are getting involved in a sport that is mostly played by white affluent Americans: lacrosse, which was invented by Native Americans.

It's opening day on Coney Island's boardwalk and there's still time to hop on a D,F,N, or Q train to Stillwell Avenue before things get started. 11 a.m. marks the Blessing of the Rides at Deno's Wonder Wheel with a ribbon cutting and live music. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will break the ceremonial egg cream at 11:30 a.m. to open the rides and the first 100 people on the Cyclone get to ride free. The Coney Island Polar Bears will serve as a chorus at 2:30 p.m. in a live performance of an original piece of music titled "Save Coney Island." Theater lovers may want to drop by the Coney Island Museum at 5 p.m. for an adaptation of Herman Melville's "The Confidence Man" (tickets $10).
