Pam Beesley Recommends: MoCCA Art Festival

We may have to wait until next April for Comic Con in New York, but there's plenty of comic goodness over at the Puck Building this weekend at the MoCCA Art Festival. Their well-punctuated description promises a generous dose of the genre: "Meet comics and cartoon artists! Four full ballrooms of cartoonists and publishers! Get sketches and autographs from Bill Sienkiewicz, Joe Staton, Arthur Suydam and others at the MoCCA Fundraising Sketch Table! Buy comics, comix, cartoons, graphic novels as well as prints and original artwork! Sit in on our always entertaining and educational panel sessions!" more ›

Egg Rolls and Egg Creams on Eldridge Street

Egg Rolls and Egg Creams on Eldridge Street

Part of a larger block party on Eldridge Street tomorrow is the annual Egg Rolls and Egg Creams Festival. For just $2, (a dollar increase from last year), you get a kosher egg roll and a classic egg cream, mixed on site by a professional and made with Fox’s U-Bet chocolate syrup, the best choice for an authentic experience. The fried kosher egg roll will be missing the standard tiny bits of red pork, of course, but you’ll still be able to enjoy all the duck sauce you can squeeze out of the little plastic packet. Last year’s attendees were taken aback somewhat by lackluster egg rolls and literally tepid egg creams (see comments here); presumably some of the kinks have been worked out for tomorrow, and it’s such a great idea- two classic foods hailing from two different cultures packaged as a combo plate. At the low price, it’s street food fusion. Other festivities on Eldridge Street tomorrow include live klezmer musicians, storytellers, stunt dancers, and face painting. more ›

A Pair of Fairs

A Pair of Fairs

If you find yourself in Soho this weekend, peel yourself away from the windows full of expensively shiny trinkets and browse instead at the Housing Works Bookstore, which is offering some especially good deals at two great events. Saturday they hold an Open Air Book Fair on Crosby between Houston and Prince. There will be live music, free coffee, and incredible discounts on books and records. Sunday brings the fifth annual Literary Magazine Fair, where you can meet the editors of many publications and buy dozens of titles for just a few dollars a copy—a fantastic way to discover new magazines and writers without breaking the bank. more ›
