After two weeks of winter sports competition, the 2006 Torino Games have officially come to a close. Winning the medal tally was Germany with 29 medals (11 gold, 12 silver, 6 bronze). Second was the United States, which had 25 (9, 9, 7), and Canada was third with 24 (7, 10, 7). The US total was its higest outside of the United States, where it had 34 in the 2002 Salt Lake City games.

Some insiders are saying that, while it's really too early to count votes, New York would have to win votes from Central and South America, Asia, and parts of Europe. Why would Europeans vote for New York? Because if Paris wins, hopes of their countries hosting the Summer Games in 2016 are gone. New York is also establishing plans of promoting the "lesser known" sports after the 2012 Games, making use of facilities that would be constructed for the games.

Much of the off-season talk among Jets fans, politicians and residents of the West Side of Manhattan has centered on one thing – the proposed $1.4 billion New York Sports and Convention Center. While Cablevision (the parent company of Madison Square Garden) has led a high-budget campaign for public opinion, while the team has recently started its counterstrike with legend Joe Namath extolling the potential of the project, of which the city would cover $600 million (and team owner Woody Johnson paying the remaining $800 million). Mayor Bloomberg and company are pushing for the project heavily, ostensibly as a boon to the city’s hopes of landing the 2012 Olympic Summer Games.

While Gothamist set out to write about every sport once, we ultimately did not accomplish that. What can we say? We're human. There were several disappointments in our mind, the obvious being the performance of USA Basketball. Dream Team? We think not. And where is USA Baseball? Great stories to us include the performance of two Americans in the men's and women's marathons. Winning two medals on the original course. We also loved the performance of the US Rowing teams. The men took gold, while the women won silver, ending droughts for both teams.

More and more the USA Basketball committee that is selecting the 12 players for this summer’s Olympic basketball squad are hearing "I’m out", especially since the recent bombings in Athens. All this makes Gothamist wonder, who's in? Players that have turned down bids to play for Team USA include Seattle’s Ray Allen (fiancé giving birth this summer), Jersey’s Jason Kidd (nagging injuries), Toronto’s Vince Carter (getting married this summer), Minnesoata’s Kevin Garnett (fatigue from prolonged playoff run), and a trio of Lakers which include Karl Malone (needs time to recover from injury filled season), Kobe Bryant (pesky pending rape trial) and Shaquile O’Neal (doesn’t really want to go). Although he has not declined his invite yet, sources say Indiana’s Jermaine O’Neal is considering pulling out because of safety concerns in Athens.
