This week, a veteran NYPD officer distraught over being called to testify in the ticket-fixing scandal which has engulfed the police force attempted (but failed) to commit suicide. Officer Robert McGee, who is currently at North Central Bronx Hospital because of burns from clutching the third rail, is telling friends that he's "ashamed of this whole thing." One source close to McGee told the News, "He said it was a spur-of-the-moment decision. He's 62, with 30 years [on the job] and an unblemished record, and to go out like this is not the way to retire. You want to retire the way you came in, with pride." more ›

Yesterday, a despondent 39-year-old man from Midtown who tried to take his life on the Williamsburg Bridge was saved by NYPD officers. They spent nearly three hours talking him down before finally handcuffing him and pulling him through a hole they cut in the fence. Witness Drew Catlin described the ordeal on Facebook: "Hours of watching. Far too many children. Far too much laughing. Only one asshole yelled jump, and only once." more ›

Northbound A train service above 168th Street stopped for over an hour this afternoon as police investigated a possible suicide attempt at the 175th Street station. The MTA tells us a woman appears to have jumped in front of the train at 2:23 p.m. and has been taken to Harlem Hospital. Her condition is currently unclear. Garbage Jumper Not Paralyzed After All

The young man whose suicide attempt last weekend was thwarted by a garbage pile is not going to be paralyzed, as had previously been suspected. Vangelis Kapatos, 26, is currently recovering at Bellevue hospital and his aunt reports he is responding to family members and will recover. It remains to be seen if he'll get to stay in the apartment whose years of back rent appears been a factor in the attempt. Yesterday afternoon, a twenty-six year-old suicidal man attempted to take his life by jumping nine stories off his 45th Street apartment building, but was saved by a post-blizzard pile of trash that had been collecting all week. And apparently it was an even closer call than expected. The 100-bag trash heap had reportedly been kept in the apartment building's basement all week, and had just been brought up to the street on Sunday morning. One neighbor said, “I can’t believe the garbage broke his fall. I guess the trash saved the guy." more ›

Leftover Blizzard Garbage Saves Lives

Earlier this afternoon, we got a report of a jumper down on 45th Street and 8th Avenue. The unidentified man tried to jump to his death from nine stories up, but was saved by a massive pile of garbage that hadn't been picked up because of the blizzard. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition, but one official told the Daily News that the garbage pile is "the only reason he's alive." Woman Survives Attempted Suicide By Subway

When F and G service was disrupted on Wednesday due to a person on the tracks at Brooklyn's 7th Avenue station, it was due to a suicide attempt. The Brooklyn Paper reports that a 34-year-old Park Slope woman made the leap onto the tracks as an F train was entering the station, but it slowed significantly and even though she ended up under the train, she survived. They report that paramedics spent around 40 minutes trying to retrieve her from the tracks, and she only suffered a few deep cuts. There's a series of photos from the rescue here. more ›

Just after the Brooklyn Bridge Park ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday, a 41-year-old Long Island woman jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge. According to the Daily News, she survived the plunge and the NYPD Harbor cops pulled her from the waters. Susan Cloud is currently in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital. The drop is 120-feet, and has been survived before—in December a 22-year-old woman recovered after taking the leap, and last January a man walked away from his jump off the Manhattan Bridge. more ›

Rapists, kiddie porno and plotting thieves all figure into socialite Gigi Jordan’s suicide note, but as far as officials are concerned, they’re all fabricated. The letter—found on her laptop after she allegedly fed her autistic son a fatal dose of prescription pills and attempted to kill herself—was revealed in court yesterday. Much of her paranoia focused on her ex-husband: "I feel his final revenge will be to kill [m]e and use [our son] in the sex trade," she wrote. According the defense the wild 20-page letter is evidence Jordan should be allowed out on bond to undergo psychiatric treatment at St. Vincent's. more ›
