Shirtless Man Suspected Of Robbing Women At Subway Stations
Video: Check Out NoLIta's Abandoned Subway Station
As if we didn't already love urban explorer Steve Duncan (Undercity) enough, here he comes with another sweet video (filmed by Andrew Wonder) showing off a part of New York City we're generally too wussy to explore ourselves. Where'd he go today? Oh, the unused half of a subway station at Spring Street between Bowery and Elizabeth.
Teen Hit By Subway Train May Have Been Running In Station
An 18-year-old aspiring chef was struck in the head by an oncoming downtown express train at the Union Square subway station yesterday morning. Adrian Rodriguez, who suffered a serious head injury and is currently at Bellevue, was apparently on his way to Marta Valle High School, where a school staffer said, "He's never late, and I know he was just trying to get to school on time. He was always on time—100 percent." And according to one report, he may have been running in the station.
Scent of Human Feces Haunts Herald Square Subway
Fox 5 is making a big stink about a nasty situation in the Herald Square subway station, where it appears that someone did a #2 and didn't flush... because there was no toilet available where the bowel movement occured. Apparently, it's been two weeks since the human waste first debuted on the landing of a stairwell, and although the MTA put up a yellow caution sign, it seems that no one bothered to clean up fecal remnants. Baby steps? Area man Paul Arking is sick of walking through the stench gauntlet during his daily commute, and this video shows he's not the only one.
Artist Ron English Talks Underbelly Project
More artists are coming forward with bits and pieces of their stories about working on the Underbelly Project, whose existence was revealed to the world this past Sunday. Project curators Workhorse and PAC were understandably paranoid about any of the 103 artists talking to press about the project, both to preserve their desire for "a space in the world that collectors couldn’t contaminate," as well because of the illegal nature of the project, and the fact that the MTA would like to catch the two curators.
Post-Underbelly, MTA To "Better Secure" Abandoned Stations
With the announcement that over 100 street artists had been sneaking into an abandoned subway station to create installations, paintings, murals, and more since last year for The Underbelly Project, naturally the question is how come the work went undetected by the MTA and NYPD for 18 months
Waiting For The 6 Train Is Made Better By Air Mattress
Reader Milan alerted us to the scene at the 33rd Street uptown 6 platform from this morning. It actually looks pretty comfortable provided nobody opens the door.
Despite Money Woes, Transit Chief Wants Station Makeovers
As the MTA faces a crushing financial shortfall that could cause service cuts and fare hikes, the new president of MTA NYC Transit revealed his plans to repaint and refurbish eight recently-renovated subway stations that he says have fallen into disrepair. "I don't want to say that because of our budget issues, we can't make improvements," said Thomas Prendergast. "There's room for improvement, and I honestly think we can do it."
Unstable Platform Edges Still A Problem In Some Subway Stations
Some of Midtown's most-trafficked subway stations have shaky platform edges that could put riders at risk, according to the Post. Nine months after a study determined that the dangerous conditions caused straphangers to fall onto the tracks, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has not entirely overhauled station rubbing boards — the pieces of wood at the very edge of subway platforms.
Herald Square Subway Station—Nexus of The Universe?
Reader and Flickr user Hello Turkey Toe took this photograph and writes, "Taken in the 34th Street - Herald Square Station, where the subway system has apparently collapsed in on itself, creating a sort of singularity..." We are also reminded of Cosmo Kramer's freakout, "Hey, I'm on First and First. How can the same street intersect with itself? I must be at the nexus of the universe."
Car Crashes Into West 72nd St Subway Entrance
There are reports coming in that a car crashed into one of the subway "headhouses" (the buildings that house the subway entrances) at West 72nd Street and Broadway. We're not sure if it's the new northern building or the older one on the south, but apparently three people were injured. According to initial reports, there are "two red tags" and "one yellow tag"—according to triage terminology, red tag is "immediate care / life-threatening" and yellow tag is "urgent care / can delay up to one hour." And the car may have been a taxi. We'll keep updating with what we learn—unclear whether this will affect the commute.
NYC Transit Cuts 360 Positions, Including Cleaners
Like most agencies out there, the MTA is making cuts, and NYC Transit is eliminating around 360 jobs. According to the Post, the jobs span cleaning, maintenance, painting and management: "63 of 1,201 subway-car cleaners and 25 of 1,515 station cleaners will be gone next year, Howard Roberts, the MTA's subway and bus chief said yesterday. Between 2009 and 2010, 308 of 2,420 managerial positions at NYC Transit will be cut."
Subway Panhandler Shot After Stabbing Cop
Yesterday afternoon, police officers shot and wounded a subway panhandler after he stabbed a cop with a screwdriver. Apparently the panhandler first went to the undercover cops and asked for one a cigarette. The Post reports, "The 26-year-old officer [Tyrone Barrionuevo] flashed his badge and identified himself. Moments later, the crazed smoker pulled out the 6-inch screwdriver and tried to plunge it into the cop's chest near his shoulder." The incident occurred at the Utica Avenue subway station in Crown Heights.
New South Ferry Subway Station (Finally) Opening Today
The new $530 million South Ferry subway terminal is opening today, after years, and more recently months, of delays. The station's new platform will allow all ten subway cars' doors to open (before only five could open on the short platform). The AP reports, "Governor David Paterson and other officials are scheduled to attend Monday's ribbon-cutting ceremony." It is also the first new station in 20 years and has some beautiful elements, like a topographic mosaic map of NYC. Photo: Ben Yankee on Flickr

The current record—24 hours, 54 minutes, 3 seconds—was set in 2006 but Ferrisi and Solarz are hoping to ride the system in under 24 hours (they started at Far Rockaway-Mott Ave station in Queens at 1:30 PM ET).

Michael Mineo, who was re-hospitalized, said, "The cops did this to me... I'm in so much pain... I've got pus coming out of me, man. I need help!" And the NY Post has photographs of Mineo being visited by the Reverend Al Sharpton, who called for an investigation into the matter and compared it to the Abner Louima incident.
News Flash: Subway Stations Are Gross
Okay, maybe it's not a news flash, but New York City Transit Riders Council has put it on paper--61 pages to be exact (PDF)--as it reported that many stations are in need of cleaning and care. The NY Times noted that the worst conditions at some included "water damage, exposed wires, rodents, foul odors, clogged track drains and general filth."
