It's 18 Degrees Cooler On The Subway Platform Than Outside

It's 18 Degrees Cooler On The Subway Platform Than Outside

Good News for your commute home. We went down to the York Street subway platform this afternoon with our trusty deer thermometer and discovered it's about 18 degrees cooler down there than it is on the open air sidewalks of New York. The thermometer showed a reading of 108 degrees on Jay Street in Brooklyn, and just 90 degrees underground. This shocking turn of events comes just days after we complained about it being around 90 degrees on the subway platform, when it was a chill 88 outside. Perspective! more ›

MTA Mulls Sliding Doors in Subway Stations

MTA Mulls Sliding Doors in Subway Stations

Nearly every time we report on a person jumping or falling into the subway tracks, we receive comments along the lines of "is it just me, or has this been happening a lot lately?" Sadly, it just happens a lot. In 2009 alone, 90 people were struck by trains and 40 of them died. In an effort to lower those numbers the MTA is going back to the idea well and is asking for proposals for a system of sliding doors on subway platforms. Like in other cities (and at AirTrain stops), the sliding glass doors would go on the edge of the platform and would only open when a train was in the station. more ›

Eight Subway Shooting Suspects Wearing Orange Jackets

Eight Subway Shooting Suspects Wearing Orange Jackets

Early this morning a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot at the southbound 2 train platform at the West Farms Square/East Tremont Ave stop, and police pulled at least 12 men from the platform for questioning. Police say the victim was shot in the chest around 1:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Barnabas Hospital. Oddly, of the 12 men pulled for questioning, the Daily News reports that "about eight of them wore similar orange puffy jackets." We're not sure if that's some sign of violence, or if eight people in the Bronx just had really bad fashion taste. more ›

Subway Intercom System Joining 21st Century!

Subway Intercom System Joining 21st Century!

Fun fact: New York's subway platforms are equipped with intercoms which can, theoretically, be used to summon help in the event of an emergency. Unfortunately, many of them are inconspicuously positioned, and they all have a built-in feature that automatically terminates the call after two minutes. Because we all know how tedious emergency calls tend to get after a couple of minutes. But a new intercom pilot program is set to change all that, with fancy new intercoms equipped with "calming" blue lights! more ›

4-Year-Old Girl Left Behind on Subway Platform

4-Year-Old Girl Left Behind on Subway Platform

A worker for a Queens daycare center was a little daycareless Friday when she left a four-year-old girl behind on a 42nd Street subway platform. Jailyn Howard and her twin sister were part of a group of children on a field trip to Manhattan, supervised by a lone employee of the Whitney Foundation, a daycare center run out of a house in Jamaica, Queens. According to one account, the worker, Roxanne Jack, was distracted by a fight between two of the children while herding them on board. But Jailyn's cousin, who was also on the field trip, tells CBS2 that Jack was preoccupied and rushing: "She was telling us to hurry up, hurry up. Because she has to be somewhere... All of a sudden she knows Jailyn is missing and she started just panicking." Fortunately, Jack and the kids got off at the next stop and came back to 42nd Street to find Jailyn in the care of police. CBS2 reports that the Whitney Foundation does not seem to be a licensed daycare center and "if that is the case," mom Janel Howard says her kids won't return there. Because it's okay to be negligent as long as you have a license! more ›

Report Finds Many Unsafe Subway Platform Edges

Report Finds Many Unsafe Subway Platform Edges

In January 2008, 14-year-old Avi Katz fell into the subway tracks at Brooklyn's Kings Highway station when edge of the subway platform—a wooden rubbing board—crumbled beneath him. Luckily, Katz managed to get back onto the platform (after three tries) and avoid being hit by a train, but the incident raised concerns about other stations with potentially dangerous platforms. Now, the MTA Inspector General Barry Kluger has released a report criticizing NYC Transit for failing to maintain them: The Post reports, "The investigation revealed visibly deteriorating yellow bars -- called rubbing boards -- at 23 of 27 stations last year that MTA workers classified as being safe." Kluger said, "Transit has had a long-term history of ineffectively dealing with the issue of platform edges." more ›

Alleged Subway Sodomy Victim Suing City for Big Bucks

Whether or not a jury finds NYPD officer Richard Kern guilty of sodomizing tattoo artist Michael Mineo with a baton after he resisted arrest in the Prospect Park subway station in October, the incident could cost tax payers as much as $200 million. Aside from the criminal case being prosecuted against Kern and two other officers, Mineo is pursuing compensation for his injuries in civil court, where his lawyers have filed a notice of claim seeking $200 million in damages from the city, the NYPD, and the officers involved. In an exclusive, NY1 reports that officials are currently evaluating the legal papers... and wondering how they're going to come up with that kind of money. more ›
