In 2009, the NYPD was forced to revise the rules governing press credentials and let online media outlets obtain press passes. But as we've found out, the application process is Kafkaesque, and nothing's really changed.
Inside Gothamist's Absurd Struggle To Get NYPD Press Passes
Video: Watch Bloomberg Make A Fool Of Himself In Tights
Mayor Bloomberg may be a lot of things. A billionaire. A three-term mayor. A Bostonian. But now there is video proof that he is not an actor, a singer, or much of a superhero. On Saturday night, Mayor Bloomberg got into his tights and aped Spider-Man (to ABBA tunes) for the Inner Circle's annual dinner. And if our recap wasn't enough for you, the Mayor's office has edited his not-short Mamma Mia! spoof into a short three-minute video that may leave you feeling a little queazy. Especially around the :38-:45 mark.
Bloomberg Loves Salty Snacks But Hates Getting Fat
Is Mayor Bloomberg's crusade to turn New Yorkers into healthy eaters really just a product of his own struggles with self-control, roller coaster dieting and poor body image? It turns out that the man who has banned trans fats, made us face calorie count signs on a daily basis and now has his squinty eyes aimed at sodium levels in restaurants and sugary soda drinks is the type of guy that "an unflattering photo of himself can trigger weeks of intense dieting and crankiness."
"This is Kevin Sheekey; I'm REDACTED, but Please Leave a Message"
Mayor Bloomberg's continued insistence that he is not currently running for President is bordering on the absurd, as even attempts to ascertain where his aide Kevin Sheekey is spending his vacation time turns up blacked out in official requests. Sheekey is Bloomberg's chief political deputy, and the man most closely identified with pushing the Mayor forward in a Presidential bid. The New York Times filed a Freedom of Information request with the Mayor's office to see what Sheekey had been up to around the time that Bloomberg excused himself from the Republican party. The results were less than revealing.
Mayor Bloomberg is More Giving Than Ever
Mayor MIchael Bloomberg's largess makes him the country's seventh biggest charitable donor. The Chronicle of Philanthropy's Top 50 Donor List (less sexy than the Forbes list, but possibly more worthy) notes he committed $205 million to various institutions last year.
If He Runs, Bloomberg Needs Tons of Petition Signatures
With news that Mayor Bloomberg is planning to attend a meeting about a possible third party bid for the White House, the mayor's possible presidential aspirations finally enter 2008. If he does plan on running, he's lucky he has his billions to get the hundreds of thousands of petition signatures to get onto ballots across the country.
Bloomberg Likes Obama, Hates Interrupting Cell Phones
Senator Barack Obama might be back in Iowa on the campaign trail, but New Yorkers are still buzzing over his coffee - and bacon and eggs and toast - klatsch with Mayor Bloomberg on Friday morning. The meeting was supposedly caught Senator Hillary Clinton off guard - and not just because it was two blocks away from her midtown offices. Bloomberg's press secretary Stu Loeser said Bloomberg wanted to talk national policy with Obama,...
Midtown Sidewalk Collapse Injures Two
As the Gothamist Newsmap noted, two construction workers fell through a sidewalk at 148 West 36th Street this afternoon. The workers had been jackhammering the sidewalk, when, as WNBC 4 reports, "the ground they were on gave way." The workers were immediately pulled from the 10 foot hole and are at Bellevue. Scary, but not as scary as the incident where a woman simply walking in Midtown fell through the sidewalk grating into an electrical transformer vault in May.
The City's Happiest Prospective Juror
Mayor Bloomberg headed to jury duty this morning, with a smile, a number of bodyguards and press aide Stu Loeser. When he showed up to the waiting room for prospective jurors, apparently a woman called a friend and said he was there for the "same foolishness" as everyone else.
Mayor Bloomberg Decides Not to Sign Pedicab Bill
Interesting turn of events in the City Council's attempt to pass a bill that would crack down on the pedicab industry. Mayor Bloomberg, who had initially supported stricter measures, was about to sign the bill but hesitated, saying, "I want to think about it."
Giuliani Company Problems and More Political Notes
- The goings-on at Rudy Giuliani's own company were the focus of two articles this past weekend. The Daily News wondered how his client list at Giuliani Partners will stack up to scrutiny, as there are gambling associations and polluters on it. Well, there are benefits to him being a Republican. And the NY Times looked at how Giuliani's campaigning might affect his company - it's questionable how successful the company has been. How did Giuliani spend part of his weekend? Why, attending the Bull Riders invitational at Madison Square Garden.
Debate Debate Rages On, Now with Religious Twist
. And, please, does his campaign really expect people to believe that Bloomberg doesn't have some gentiles who can drill information the mayor on Thursday? And Bloomberg has been a Jew for his entire life, though not necessarily the most religious of them - it's pretty convenient for him to pull the "I'm a Jew" card now - and his minions were still calling for support on Rosh Hashanah!
Mayor Mike's RV
Gothamist admits it: Ever since we read this Newsday article about Mayor Bloomberg's new office in Washington Heights, we've been dying for pictures. Why? It's all in the lede:
Mayor Michael Bloomberg swung by his new Dyckman Street campaign office in Washington Heights Wednesday to show off his new, albeit leased, campaign bus. Bloomberg toured the half-bus, half-platform white monstrosity, but opted not to test his popularity by tooling around the city's best-known Dominican neighborhood.more ›
Bloomberg Still Trails Ferrer in the Polls
It must be nutty at the Mayor's posh campaign headquarters, because both a NY1/Newsday poll and a Marist/WNBC poll show Fernando Ferrer leading by considerable amounts. The NY1/Newsday poll shows by a Ferrer lead of 14 points (49% to Bloomberg's 35%), and the WNBC Marist poll has Ferrer with 49% and Bloomberg at 42%. Mayor Bloomberg would beat all other Democratic challengers after Ferrer; Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields leads the others. However, while Ferrer's numbers look great against Bloomberg, he still doesn't have the 40% of the Democratic vote that would eliminate the need for a Democratic runoff: According to NY1, he's got 35%, with Fields at 15%, Weiner 8%, and Miller 7%. Damn, Weiner and Miller are really low. Anyway, Fields' campaign says that Fields would probably win a runoff, and Ferrer may suffer some backlash from his remarks about Amadou Diallo's death.
