Inside Fleisher's, The New Park Slope Meatopia

Inside Fleisher's, The New Park Slope Meatopia

Jessica and Josh Applestone have finally opened their much anticipated Fleisher's outpost in Park Slope at Fifth Avenue and Sackett. Yesterday we stopped by the soon-to-be-hotspot and chatted with the couple, who also run the popular upstate butcher shop. "This neighborhood makes a lot sense for us," Jessica stated simply. "It's our demographic." Yup: Park Slope residents do a great deal of home delivery, and in case you hadn't noticed, the neighborhood is crawling with parents concerned about organic food. The Applestones should do just fine here. more ›

From The Mailbag: Strollers, Soap Operas, and Constructive Criticism

We receive a lot of e-mail. Most of these missives are carefully read, discussed at length among the editors, and courteously replied to in a timely fashion—except for the ones that are so bizarre and irrelevant that we're simply afraid to engage the sender. Instead, we'll share them with you. Behold, the eccentric underbelly of the Gothamist inbox: more ›

The Gate Joins Park Slope Stroller Ban

The Gate Joins Park Slope Stroller Ban

The bars in Brooklyn have been leaning towards siding with the stroller-less set for years—one by one, it's been like watching dominoes fall in super slow motion. In January 2008, Union Hall put up a "No Strollers Please" sign on their door, only to be met by outraged Park Slope parents. The stroller war has raged on in bars in the borough since (for a while there it even looked like Fornino may join in), and just this February Double Windsor instituted a stroller ban during certain hours. And now The Gate has fallen... more ›

Another Brooklyn Bar Bans Babies (After 5)

Another Brooklyn Bar Bans Babies (After 5)

Are baby bans seeping over the Park Slope line and into Windsor Terrace? According to Courier-Life, Double Windsor owner Jeff Switzer says their policy of no babies after 5 p.m. has been in effect for a few months now, and was instituted after some feedback from patrons. He says, “It’s more of an issue between people that live in the neighborhood than it is with us. Most people who come to the bar would prefer not to have babies in the bar.” And the debate rages on! more ›

Scolds Scuttle Union Hall at CB6 Meeting

Scolds Scuttle Union Hall at CB6 Meeting

Late last month some residents of Park Slope secured themselves a Community Board meeting with CB6 to air their complaints about Union Hall, and attempt to stop their liquor license from getting renewed. The meeting took place last night, lasted more than two hours, and to everyone's surprise -- the board voted against Union Hall. The vote of six to two (with two abstentions) means CB6 will advise the State Liquor Authority (SLA) against renewing the liquor license of Union Hall. more ›

Brooklyn Restaurant's Stroller Solution

Brooklyn Restaurant's Stroller Solution

After Union Hall banned strollers (and the little ones who ride in them) -- a line was drawn in the sandbox, waging a full on war between the childless and the stroller pushers. But could there now be a light at the end of the tunnel? The Brooklyn Paper is reporting on a possible solution, at least at Water Street Restaurant in DUMBO. more ›

Rules for the Stroller Set

Rules for the Stroller Set

Another Park Slope blogger is pushing the stroller feud even further with a post on stroller rules (featuring illustrations!). This particular "prammer" states: "there are enough jerks out there to give us all a bad name. To combat these sidewalk simpletons, I propose the following pramming penalties be implemented immediately." more ›

Photo of the Day: Park Slope Trail

Photo of the Day: Park Slope Trail

This photo, taken on 5th & Union, pretty much sums up the war going on in Brooklyn. The fictional (but not really) "Slope Trail" includes a doggie bakery, luxury condos, a gentrified playground and spot to procure pricey Brooklyn T's. Everything you'd expect on an urban hike. The stencil even includes a "controversial" stroller being pushed by a parent (or nanny!) who is clearly holding a Starbucks coffee. We just hope they're not pushing that stroller towards Union Hall! more ›

Union Hall is a Bar, Not a Daycare

Union Hall is a Bar, Not a Daycare

News came this past week that surely rocked the cradles of many Park Slope babies: Union Hall is no longer stroller-friendly! Will this be the beginning of a trend where Park Slope parents get booted from their home turf bars? more ›
