Jackson Heights, the birthplace of Scrabble, is finally getting the recognition it deserves—for the second time—with the triumphant return of a beloved Scrabble-themed street sign.
Scrabble Street Sign Coming Back To Queens
Atheists Threaten Lawsuit Over 9/11 "Seven In Heaven" Street Sign
Local atheists say they're considering suing the city over a new street sign in Red Hook that honors firefighters who died on 9/11. The change was made after winning approval from Community Board 6 and the City Council, and at a ceremony last month, part of Richards Street was renamed "Seven in Heaven Way"—atheists be damned. At the time, a spokesperson for City Councilmember Sara González told us, "There are any number of streets named after religious figures, like Sister Mary Franciscus Way [in Sunset Park]? Should we not honor these people because the community chooses to call them the Seven in Heaven?" But it looks like the city is messing with the wrong atheists, and may have to fend off a lawsuit from these heathens!
Joey Ramone Has Most Sought After Street Sign
Have you been to Joey Ramone Place lately? The intersection of Bowery and East 2nd Street was dedicated to the late singer, but his sign is so sought after that it's been moved from the standard 12-feet above street level, to 20-feet above! The change was first noticed by EV Grieve, and today the NY Post follows up noting that the 8-foot move happened after too many fans tried to steal the sign. In fact, out of New York City's 250,900 street signs, it's been stolen the most (albeit, only four times in the past seven years).
Road Sign Hacking Continues Around Town
Yesterday's sighting of a DOT warning that "New York is Dying" apparently had less to do with the city's decaying infrastructure and was more likely the handiwork of hacker(s) who had their way with road signs in Manhattan yesterday. Commenters yesterday pointed us to a January posting on iHacked that gave simple instructions on how to manipulate the roadside messages as well as the fact that the Diggnation founders had just mentioned it (and even gave out the signs' default password!) this past week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Who's Hacking These Signs?
A reader sent us in this picture taken at East 4th Street and Broadway in front of the French Connection, claiming that "all sorts of signs (were) taken over" today. Apparently another sign at the corner of Houston and Chrystie Streets read "Party at Julie's." Who is behind this DOTomfoolery? Has Poster Boy gone digital?? Does anyone have directions to Julie's???
