Overnight internet sensation Ryan Gosling has finally spoken out about that somewhat awkward scuffle he jumped into earlier this summer, right on the mean streets of Astor Place. The then unknown Gosling decided to break up a fight going down in the middle of an intersection, where a man had been stopped after stealing a painting. Gosling eventually paid the artist for the work, and the thief was sent on his way with the stolen item, learning absolutely nothing about the consequences of his actions. Because everything is, this was all caught on tape and later put into the YouTubes, making the young man famous (he's even since been cast in a movie called Drive which we hear is really good). Watch him blush below—this kid's got a future!:

Police Search For Man Who Mistakenly Killed Friend
Staten Island police are searching for the young man who fatally shot his best friend—by mistake—during a street fight gone sour. Police believe that Drew B. Casseus was backing up his friend Jonathan "Beanz" Vazquez in a street fight with an unidentified parolee in Port Richmond last week. Now, Vazquez's mother is worried about Casseus facing street justice for the mistake: “It isn’t like any of us would hurt him, but there are people on the street that are very angry. I’m just praying that he turns himself in. I don’t want to see any more tragedy. An eye for an eye doesn’t work. I don’t want him to take his own life and I don’t want anyone to take his life,” mother Luna Suarez told SILive.
Videos: Is This the Summer of the Street Fight Video?
We've noticed a recent uptick of YouTube street fight videos landing in the Gothamist tips inbox (tips@gothamist.com, y'all!), and after spotting yet another street fight video on NYC the Blog, we had to wonder: Are there more street fight videos surfacing this month than usual? Is the record-breaking heat making the natives more brawl-prone? Based on an a highly unscientific analysis of fights uploaded to YouTube since April, we must conclude in the affirmative.
Paterson Ready To Rumble With Bloomberg
Last week, Mayor Bloomberg blamed Albany and Governor Paterson for giving him no choice but to cut programs and thousands of workers from the city's budget. Now, Paterson is reportedly rolling up his sleeves, because he's tired of being kicked around. A "source close to the Paterson administration" tells the Post's Fred Dicker, "Mayor Bloomberg is not going to treat the governor poorly, with disrespect! We've got just as many muscles as the mayor and his people do—and if they want a street fight, then so be it."
Video: Boxing on Bleecker
Ah, springtime in the city. One local recently stepped out of a coffee shop to find these two hooligans boxing on the corner of Bleeker Street and 6th Avenue. Spoiler alert: expect one good punch, a racial slur, and a spit shot... but surprisingly it didn't escalate beyond that. Have NYC street fights even gotten soft?
Shoeshiner Brawls With Passerby In Old-Timey Street Fight
In a story that reads like it was ripped from the headlines 80 years ago, a Midtown shoeshiner got into a brawl with a passerby yesterday who didn't want to hear that his kicks were dirty. The fight started at the corner of 47th Street and Sixth Avenue when the passerby objected to Don Ward's offer for a $5 deep polish and punched the 43-year-old shoeshiner. "[He] took his anger out on me because of his own dirty shoes," Ward told the Post. After the fisticuffs, the pair — as is only fitting in squabbles involving shoeshiners — spat at each other until cops arrived.
Video: Bushwick Street Fight
Summertime really sets the stage for street fights, and BushwickBK points us to one they say recently took place between two men in their 60s (though they look younger to us). The weapon of choice: aluminum rods.
