Yesterday, we were all a bit disturbed by a video of a bloody, disoriented man rolling around on the L train tracks after falling off the platform at the DeKalb Avenue station in Bushwick as another person filmed the injured man while mocking him. Lest you forget where you are (New York City) and who you are (a very important New Yorker) here is a little sign to help you keep in check—located at 14th Street, it states: Please Do Not Smile At Strangers. Subway Art Blog thinks it may be to help out tourists, who come from places where it is perfectly acceptable to smile at strangers. Maybe the sunshine got to our head over the weekend, but we say go ahead and smile at strangers (how else would Missed Connections get filled up)! Just don't smile at the wrong stranger, like that guy who ties a string around his penis and rubs one out on the subway.
Video: Man Gets Carried Through Manhattan
Mark Malkoff has already hit up 171 Starbucks in one day, lived in an IKEA... and now he's projected his latest project onto the YouTube screen: getting carried through Manhattan. He tells us the project helps disprove the myth that New York is unfriendly, as he managed to get carried 9.4 miles on stranger's backs, from the Staten Island Ferry to 141st St & Broadway. But when you have a camera and microphone... people might be more willing to help out. All in all, 155 people made it happen—and during his trip, some theater kids even sang him that Ke$ha song.
City Murders on Track to Record Low in '07
Official crime statistics recorded by the city this year indicate that New York is on track to record fewer than 500 murders in 2007, the lowest number since reliable statistics began to be recorded in 1963. The trends recorded thus far this year, show that murders by strangers are also down dramatically. So far, there have only been 428 murders recorded in 2007––412 killings and 16 people who succumbed to injuries sustained earlier. According...
