SoHo Shop Celebrates Halloween With a Hanging

A reader sent us this photo of a "Halloween-themed" window display at the Iceberg Army Navy Surplus store in SoHo. We called the shop and they claim to have received no complaints over the window, and said they don't expect to, as it's "just a Halloween display." And nothing says "Carhartts" like a pumpkin hanging.

Duane Reade Creeps Into Williamsburg

Williamsburg Waterfront, you are growing up so fast! The area, drowned in luxury condos, will soon have its first chain store grand opening! Brownstoner recently spotted the shiny, new Duane Reade, "one of the three businesses signed up for retail space at Northside Piers on Kent Avenue, set to open on Saturday. Word of the ubiquitous drugstore chain's arrival on the Brooklyn waterfront first broke over a year ago; signage confirmed the news back in June." Their first space in the neighborhood is located at North 5th and Kent, a grueling 15 blocks from the closest Chase Bank. Meanwhile, just four blocks away is the current establishment hipsters get their Adderall refilled at, King's Pharmacy. Will their customers remain loyal?

Queens Convenience Store on Lucky Lotto Streak

Dispersing two winning lotto tickets in eight weeks is pretty good PR for your store. The NY Times reports that is exactly what has happened at Shiv Convenience Store in Jamaica, Queens. You may recall that one local won the $133 million jackpot there in July, and this past Sunday another man took home $66,053; both times the machine chose the numbers. Lottery HQ in Schenectady told the paper, "We have 16,000 retailers. When I saw the Shiv Convenience Store, I was like, ‘get out of here.’” In 2007 a similar streak happened at a store in Astoria (but three times in a row). Owner of Shiv, Bharat Patel, says he doesn't buy tickets at his own store because he doesn't want customers to think it's rigged, but he is very enthusiastic when a customer wins. When he discovered this week's winner, he lifted the man (a Popeye's employee who played frequently) off the floor, and screamed, "You won! You won!” Meanwhile, the Lotto is getting a makeover.

Will Wal-Mart Roll Back In to NYC?

Earlier this year Reverend (and mayoral hopeful) Billy Talen told us, "Wal-Mart in New York City? DEVIL GET THEE BEHIND ME! As Mayor, I will take that company to the LAKE OF HELLFIRE!" Since then, the chain has been quiet, leaving one to assume they either got the fear in them, or they're assembling an army for the ultimate showdown. Now Crain's reports that the store is hunting for locations in the city again, this time focusing on all five boroughs. The store's spokesman said, “Now, more than any other time in recent memory, New York City residents want and need better access to our stores... Hopefully we will be able to bring a store to New York in the near future.” Along with Billy, local labor leaders and other elected officials are also against a Wal-Mart moving in, one saying, “The reality remains the same. Wal-Mart is not welcome in New York City, and it should not try to take advantage of these economic times to slither in.” And City Council Speaker Christine Quinn declared, “Until they make actual changes, providing a living wage and ending the practice of preying on small businesses, I will block any attempt to locate in the five boroughs.”

Notorious Nightclub To Become Boring Store

A church becomes a nightclub, a nightclub becomes a store, NYC becomes Disney World, and so on. Remember that whole "the limelight is going to be a mall" and then "no, just kidding, it's going to be a film studio" thing? Well it's going to be a store now! The NY Post reports on the latest news surrounding the former famed nightclub, saying the "Jack Menashe, who owned nightclub Lounge in SoHo, is turning the long-vacant, 1849 Gothic Revival church into Limelight Marketplace with the help of designers James Mansour and Melisca Klisanin," whoever they are. Will the ghosts of drugged-up trannies and club kids haunt the soon-to-be shopping mecca?

MTA Stalls Lola Staar Store Opening

Watch out, MTA—Coney Island's Lola Staar is giving people another reason to be upset with the way things are run. The Brooklyn Paper reports that after getting kicked out of her last storefront from talking smack about landlord Joe Sitt, Staar moved into the MTA's "reopened European-style Stillwell Avenue hub." However, she sees no sign of the shop opening for the season since the blueprints seem to be held up at the MTA offices, where they have been since February. She told the paper, “My business is seasonal, so if they tell me I can’t open until October, I really won’t see any business until next summer. I call [the MTA] all the time and I get absolutely nothing out of them." The MTA promises they are reviewing them, but that the department is backlogged. Staar says "I could pay them rent right now." Hello, MTA, someone wants to give you money!

Crazy Eddie Electronics Stores Making Insane Comeback

A Brooklyn entrepreneur has purchased the trademark for Crazy Eddie, a Northeast electronics retail chain famous in the '80s for its irritating, low-budget ads, which featured DJ Jerry Carroll hyperventilating about the store's "insane" sales. (Watch below.) The company went bankrupt in 1989 after the U.S. Attorney in New Jersey busted brothers Eddie Antar and his nephew Sam for fraudulent business practices.

On the Block, Barneys Not Attractive to Buyers

Even Dubai is having money issues! Bloomberg News reports that the Dubai-based Istithmar World PSJC "may sell the luxury retailer for less than half what it paid two years ago as the state-owned fund seeks to raise cash to meet debt payments." Istithmar paid $942.3 million for the retail store in 2007, but sources say bids seem to be in the $350 million to $600 million range. An analyst points out, "It’s a buyers’ market. The fact that luxury-goods stocks have fallen more than 30 percent in the past year is also going to weigh on expectations.” Right—especially since some customers can't get credit! Related: The Barneys Warehouse Sale starts tomorrow.

Jefferson Market, the neighborhood institution on Sixth Avenue near 11th Street, may be on its way out after almost eight decades in business. The Times has a preemptive obituary, pinning the imminent cause of death on competition from Whole Foods and Traders Joe's, regrettable management choices, and a new breed of locals. “A lot of these new families, with all this money, they don’t cook,” explains co-owner Louis Montuori, whose 87-year-old uncle Anthony Montuori "still rises at 4:30 a.m. to come to the store from his home in New Jersey and deliver groceries." Now Montuori is desperately seeking a new partner to pump some cash into the place, though he admits it's not really the best timing: “I picked the worst week in history to be looking for an investor.”

Last year there was talk of Apple taking root on the Upper West Side (at the old Victoria’s Secret store on Broadway and W 67th St), and now the NY Times adds to the rumor mill, saying "the applicant on the Aug. 8 alteration permit is the architectural firm of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Among their clients is Apple Inc., for whom they have designed Apple stores in Midtown, SoHo," and others worldwide. While every press outlet has seemed to hack into their secret plans, Apple is still keeping mum about the UWS store. A commenter on City Room, however, says that it is confirmed and it will be "the largest Apple store in the U.S." Developing...

It was previously reported that Target would be opening their promotional "Bullseye Bodegas" at four temporary locations around Manhattan on September 11th. Now the opening date is September 12th, so either the reports were wrong or someone in marketing realized that 9/11 might not be the most ideal day to launch a campaign with the word "bullseye" in it.

Roughly six years have passed since the controversial Red Hook IKEA was first proposed, further dividing an already fragmented community. Next month the 346,000-square-foot store, the first IKEA in New York City, will finally open on Beard Street, and, you guessed it, the community is still divided. John McGettrick, co-chair of the Red Hook Civic Alliance, insists IKEA is a waste of 22 acres of prime waterfront property and will create a traffic nightmare on Red Hook’s quaint back streets.

Yohji Yamamoto's recently opened Y-3 store at 317 West 13th Street in the West Village is upsetting some locals. One tipster writes in:

The idiots at the new Y-3 store on 13th street leave the front door (a garage door) open all day long. It is 30 degrees outside, yet that strip of the sidewalk is toasty warm.
While a toasty warm sidewalk may sound cozy, it shows the wasteful energy practices of the store. Council member Gale Brewer introduced a bill last year that would forbid commercial buildings to keep their doors or windows open while running air-conditioners. If caught doing so, the establishment would be fined $200 per window and door left opened. This would also pertain to those stores luring cold customers in with their heat.

MUJI is on the verge of opening its first store in the United States. The Japanese retailer, whose original name meant "No Brand Quality Goods", is opening up a 2,000 square foot location on Broadway. Since we visited last week, the store has taken the protective covering off and stocked its shelves. Gothamist stopped by this morning for a preview. We can already say that one of the biggest issues is going to be...

We've been excited about the first U.S. store from MUJI since March. This Friday at noon, the Japanese retailer (whose full name Mujirushi Ryōhin, translates to "No Brand Quality Goods") will open its SoHo location at 455 Broadway. We got to tour the store last week for a quick peek as workers were getting it ready. The store is 2,000 square feet, with products ranging from its popular stationery line to cooking utensils and...
