While the decision to pull the plug on Coney Island's Bank Building is irreversible, it's current half-demolished state is now frozen for the time being. Amusing the Zillion reports that they've postponed their funeral service for the historic building, which was expected to be nothing but dust in two weeks time, because the Department of Buildings has issued a stop work order.
Coney Island Bank Building Demo Stopped... For Now
Brooklyn Grange Can Start Farming Again
After receiving a stop work order last week, rooftop farm Brooklyn Grange can finally get back to installing over a million pounds of dirt and seedlings on their Long Island City rooftop. Though they insist they began work only "after many months of intensive planning, exhaustive fundraising, and rigorous preparation," the New York City Department of Buildings claimed the group never secured the right permits for the project. But as of yesterday, they're back up and running.
Brooklyn Grange Faces Queens Permit Problems
The for-profit rooftop farm Brooklyn Grange—which began installation on the Standard Motor Products building in Long Island City last week—was issued a stop-work order on Friday for not securing permits for the project. The New York City Department of Buildings said the group never showed engineering plans proving the 40,000 square feet of rooftop was sturdy enough to hold nearly a million pounds of dirt and vegetables. Farmer Ben Flanner told the Times, "Our enthusiasm to get plants in for the season outpaced our paperwork, and we are doing everything we can with our architect and engineer to work this out."
Shepard Fairey's SoHo Mural Illegal?
Shepard Fairey's newly finished SoHo mural may have to come down soon. Animal New York noticed these stop work orders posted to the side of the work say "all work done without a permit," and they will either need to get the right permit or tear the work down. Meanwhile, the opening of Fairey's May Day exhibition on Wooster street seems to be going great. People have been waiting around the block to get in, and the first 300 will get a free print. Fairey also opened a pop-up shop for his OBEY clothing line on the LES, complete with awesome skateboards.
Falling Glass At Goldman Sachs' Tribeca Tower
On Saturday, there were reports of windows falling from a Tribeca building, likely due to the strong winds, and now it turns out the building in question was the new Goldman Sachs headquarters at Murray and West Streets. And it's not the first time things have been falling from the nearly finished 43-story building.
Stop Work Order at Lundy’s Site Halts ‘Cherry Hill’
Part of the floor plan devoted to a new, 400-seat restaurant inside the historic Lundy’s space in Sheepshead Bay is what developers are calling an “ancillary use” gourmet foods market. The controversial Cherry Hill Market, the Buildings Department contends, is actually just a grocery store by another name.
Work Stopped on Bob Dylan's Former Pad
Once word spread that Bob Dylan's former room at the Hotel Chelsea (#211) was being destroyed by the new corporate overlords running the joint, a brand spankin' new Stop Work Order was delivered by the Dept. of Buildings. The residents there report that they "responded promptly when informed of this wanton destruction, determining that the 'work' being done exceeded the scope of the permit (which was just for bathroom and kitchen renovation), and issuing a FULL STOP WORK ORDER covering the entire building." Allegedly they were "pulling down walls and ripping out a mantelpiece" prior to the halt. The times they aren't a changin' just yet...but perhaps a full restoration is in order to eliminate that electric light blue wall color.
Studio B Keeps Workin' Despite Stop Work Orders
Two years ago Studio B promised/threatened to bring Miami to Greenpoint, and for better or worse, the venue/club/bar has delivered ever since. Currently they're raising the bar by creating a palm tree adorned rooftop oasis -- and the neighbors are just thrilled.
