Last night, a stolen Mercedes-Benz, chased by the car's owner and police from a number of towns, barreled into a Honda Accord in New Milford, NJ. The Bergen Record reports that the Accord was ripped in half, killing a 10-year-old girl and critically injuring a 14-year-old boy (the car was driven by the 10-year-old's mother). The impact of the crash sent debris hundreds of feet. The Mercedes had apparently been left running when the owner went inside his house for another car's keys; when he saw his car was stolen, he called the police and tried to pursue Harold Saenz, 22, himself. A Bergen County prosecutor says police were not chasing the stolen car--just following. Saenz suffered minor injuries and taken into police custody; he was charged with felony murder and aggravated manslaughter.

Police say that in an attempt to investigate a stolen Mustang, the suspect gave chase, hitting a police officer whose gun "accidentally discharged." The incident occured around 8 p.m, at East 55th Street and Clarkson in Brooklyn; the suspect died at Kings County Hospital.

The police are upset with Staten Island car owners. Why? Because many tend to leave their keys in the ignition, giving a free ride to thieves.

Earlier this morning, around 1:30AM, police were chasing a stolen car in Brooklyn, at 93rd Street and 4th Avenue, but the 1997 Nissan slipped away, heading onto the Belt Parkway. The cops later found it on the Parkway at 65th Street, after it had crashed into a car carrying four people, killing one.

Early this morning, a city medical examiner's van crashed into a Nissan Altima on Fort Hamilton Parkway, leaving the Altima's driver and front passenger dead and at least five others injured. Around 3:30AM, van was headed south on the parkway when it was "struck by the Altima, traveling east on 44th Street."
