Atlanta Thrashers 5, Rangers 4 (SO): Things looked rosy with a three-goal lead late in the second period. But then things disintegrated. Steve Valiquette allowed a goal with 21 seconds to go before intermission. Then two more goals in the third period set up a shootout that went five rounds without a goal. How important will this squandered point be? Only time will tell. Valiquette did have his first NHL assist in the game. But that plus goals by Chris Drury, Nikolay Zherdev, Nik Antropov and Drury again went to waste. The Rangers won't get many opponents as easy as Atlanta the rest of the way.

• Heat 101, Nets 96 (OT): For the second night in a row, the Nets played an overtime game. This time, however, the Nets were unable pull out the victory. Leading Nets scoring and assists leader Devin Harris sat out the game with a sore hamstring. Harris' replacement Keyon Dooling led the Nets with 23 points, including a shot to force overtime, and Vince Carter added 20 points in the losing effort. The Heat, who were playing without Shawn Marion, trailed by 16 points in the first quarter and were led by Dwyane Wade with 29 points. The win by the Heat was their biggest comeback win of the season.
• Capitals 2, Rangers 1: Things were tied with the 2nd period coming to an end before Caps winger Alex Ovechkin broke that tie. Ovechkin scored with 32 seconds left on a shorthanded goal, beating Steve Valiquette. The goal proved to be the difference.
• St. John's 71, Notre Dame 65: The Redmen Storm upset the #7 Irish in Coach Norm Roberts' biggest win of his career at St. John's.
• Sharks 5, Islanders 3: The Islanders were out shot by the Sharks 47-24 in the loss.

Vince Carter put forth one of his best efforts of the season -- a 29-point, nine-rebound performance. And that was after a nasty elbow sent him to the locker room. But the Nets' defense -- or the Mavericks' poor shooting -- was the story in this one. Dallas made only 36.5 percent of its shots.

• Coyotes 5, Rangers 1: Wayne Gretzky returned to Madison Square Garden, the site of his final game as a player, to coach his Phoenix club to an easy win over the Rangers. His voice was hoarse because of a flu and laryngitis. Similar symptoms sidelined New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist, and Steve Valiquette wasn't up to the challenge of facing the worst offense in the Western Conference. Thanks to the wonders of the unbalanced schedule and the lockout, this was Phoenix's first trip to New York since 2002. At the rate the Rangers played against them, they might not want them back for another five years.
• Devils 4, Flyers 2: What more can be said about Martin Brodeur? He excelled in net again, and the Devils used his stopping of a penalty shot as a morale-booster during their home win over the Flyers. John Madden had two goals and an assist.

Celtics 112, Nets 101: Early indications have the road to the NBA Finals going through Boston. If the Nets entertain any hopes of becoming a legit contender, they'll have to find a better measuring stick. As if the Nets didn't have enough concerns about Vince Carter, their star left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury. At least he had 17 points when he left. Beating up on the Eastern Conference may...
