Jets Putting Rex in Effect as Head Coach

The next head coach of the Jets will be Rex Ryan, who will step down from his current post as the coordinator of the well-respected Baltimore Ravens defense. The Jets are reported to have made an offer almost immediately following the Ravens' loss to Pittsburgh in last night's AFC Championship. ESPN says that the terms are almost identical to the four-year, $11.5 million deal signed over the weekend by former Giants Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to become the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams.

Spags Gets His Riches

The Giants suffered a loss off the field on Saturday when the St. Louis Rams decided to hire Steve Spagnuolo as their head coach. Spags came to the Giants from Philadelphia before the 2007 season and quickly built New York into one of the top defenses in the league. After the Giants won the Super Bowl in 2008, Spags became one of the hottest coaching candidates in the game and only returned to New York after they offered him a $3 million deal, huge money for a coordinator. Spagnuolo was also in the running for the Jets job, but it appears they are more focused on Rex Ryan, son of Buddy and the defensive coordinator of the Ravens.

Cowher Not Interested in Jets Job

After changing reports about whether he'd speak to the Jets, former Steelers coach Bill Cowher told Gang Green no thanks. The team issued a statement at 11 p.m. last night, "After reaching out to coach Cowher's representatives, we were informed that he is not a candidate for the position." A source tells Newsday's Bob Glauber talks "never advanced to the point of scheduling a formal interview. Material items such as [front-office] structure, money and length of contract were never discussed." The spotlight is now on the Giants' defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo (Glauber calls him "brilliant") and the Daily News reports he "will interview Saturday for the job." And last night, the Broncos fired Mike Shanahan. We guess we'll have to wait until 2009 to see what happens.

You’ve seen it a thousand times by now and it’s clearly the biggest play in Giants history. Eli Manning drops back, somehow escapes three different Patriots from sacking him and then heaves the ball downfield. David Tyree jumps up, pins the ball against his forehead and somehow brings it down without losing control with Rodney Harrison all over him. Yes, you can see it in your mind, but what do you call it?
