Why did Gothamist grab a winter coat as we left our apartment this morning? It is going to be in the mid- to upper-50s. What were we thinking? Truth is we were preoccupied. Not by thoughts of rain tomorrow. Nor were we thinking that winter might make a brief return next week.

By the way, no rain is in the forecast today. This morning's clouds will turn to sun this afternoon. High of 79.
DJ On The 8's – Part III
Today we wrap up our discussion with Steve Hurst, the guy who makes you look back at the television screen during the local forecast on The Weather Channel and ask, "Is that... Moby?" If it weren't for him, we'd still be listening to the Windham Hill New Age library during our local forecasts. But instead, Steve has mixed it up and given us something a little more interesting to listen to while we evaluate our weather-conscious wardrobe for the day. Recently however, the music has been getting drowned out by the addition of an automated voice-over reading our forecast to us. Gothamist isn't a big fan of the voice, but we asked Steve about it as well as come other questions about the on-air personalities, security, and his favorite things about our wonderful city.

Few people walk in to a situation like Steve Hurst... literally. While working at The Weather Channel, he walked into his producer's office for something, and walked out, with the job of choosing the music for the local forecasts. That may not seem like that big of a deal, but for a lot of people it is. Gothamist has mentioned to several friends that we got the opportunity to speak to Steve, and the overall reaction was in the general vicinity of, "Cool!". The job has gained some street cred in recent years as Steve began to replace some of the coma-drool inducing elevator music with songs by bands like Phish, Pink Floyd, and Moby. And believe it or not, he has people tracking him down to praise him, threaten him, and request songs.
Manhattanhenge, Take 2
Speaking of weather, Gothamist Weather has an mini-interview with the man who picks music for the Weather Channel, Steve Hurst. And Gothamist on Manhattanhenge.

Gothamist remembers the day well. We were rolling out of bed, late for a meeting and still longing for more sleep. We flipped on the Weather Channel to help us decide what grade of heavy jacket we were going to need for the morning’s blustery walk to work. The clock struck 8 after, and we focused our attention on the “accurate and dependable” local forecast greeting us with a pleasant familiarity. But as the forecast began, we lost all focus. What was this??? Is this… Phish… on the Weather Channel? Surely not. They would never play this… Indeed, they did. The Weather Channel, long known for its dreamy, mind numbing elevator music landscaped local forecasts, had made a noticeable change. That change was Steve Hurst.
