Last month Brownstoner did some detective work and uncovered which house the This Old House crew would be renovating in Brooklyn. The announcement that the show would come to New York City for the first time ever came earlier this year, when Kevin O'Connor and Norm Abram were still scoping out potential fixer-uppers (there were hundreds of applicants from all five boroughs, with 1/4 being from Brooklyn).

Silver and gold are so last season, if you're a trendsetting criminal -- you know it's all about the copper these days. And where better to find it than in brownstone Brooklyn? The Brooklyn Paper reports:
At least four heists of the once-cheap electrical conductor have been pulled off in Brownstone Brooklyn since June, and a few others were foiled when the cops caught the bad guys red-handed before they could make off with their ill-gotten orange gold.Continue reading "Copper Capers on the Rise in Brooklyn"
In late August, a family was terrorized when three men forced their way into the Crown Heights apartment. Now, police have charged one of the suspects with multiple counts of rape and assault.
A Crown Heights family endured a lifetime of horrors when a group of men raped the mother, daughter, and family friend during a home invasion robbery. The Daily News reports that around 1AM yesterday morning, three men "pushed their way into the second-floor Sterling Place apartment." The Post says the 41-year-old father and two sons, ages 14 and 22, were pistol-whipped and tied up before they preyed upon the women, a 43-year-old woman, her 17-year-old daughter and a teenage family friend.
Last week Brooklyn Papers ran a story about celebrities buying houses in Brooklyn. One of those celebrities was Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is rumored to have purchased a brownstone on Sterling Place, off 5th Avenue. With star-sightings in Park Slope going for a dime-a-dozen, the story wasn't exactly big news-- except that they illustrated it with a picture of Gullenhaal buck naked on some kind of bear-skin futon. Then all hell broke loose-- and dozens of complaint letters poured in:
If every building in New York City was to somehow be wiped off the face of the earth, and I had the power to pick only one to remain standing, I would choose Tom’s Diner in a heartbeat. Though I think of the Chrysler Building like a part of my own body, I would have to let it go. I get chills every time I catch a glimpse of Yankee Stadium, but I would bid it a premature farewell. Tom’s Diner, on Washington Avenue and Sterling Place in Prospect Heights, has taken hold of my soul like no other place in New York.
