Make Your Own Lion Pumpkin, Courtesy Of The NYPL

Everyone go give some money to the New York Public Library, because on top of giving you books for free, they have really been going the extra mile lately. They give you special events, and Winnie the Pooh, and fun little extras that they totally are not obligated to give because they are already giving you all those free books! But they do it anyway. And in their latest gesture, they're giving you a stencil so you can carve out your pumpkin to look like their lions, Patience and Fortitude. Here's a stencil they've provided, and an instructional video: more ›

Is Tourist Sidewalk Lane A Banksy??

Is the tourist sidewalk line that suddenly showed up earlier this week actually a work of Banksy? A tipster pointed us to Banksy's book Wall and Piece, which has several examples of his text work, which bear some resemblance to the sidewalk lane (you can see some of those examples above). Banksy pieces have been popping up all over the city during the past week since his arrival in NY, and the sidewalk line has simultaneously become the "talk of the internet." more ›

Street Artist Urges NYC to VOTE

Street Artist Urges NYC to VOTE

Street artist Clark Clark (fake name alert) has been urging New Yorkers to vote through his "VOTE" graffiti campaign. The design mimics that of Robert Indiana's famous LOVE sculpture circa the 1970s. The 25-year-old Clark told The Villager:

“I’ve hit four boroughs now,” Clark said, sitting in his Flatbush, Brooklyn, apartment, surrounded by his own work. “I still want to do Staten Island. I had wanted to go and do all of Vito Fossella’s walls, but he did the right thing and stepped down.”
He also notes that it's an homage to artist Indiana, not a parody -- and hopes to connect with the younger, urban voters by appealing to them through his nonpartisan campaign. He told the paper, however, that he thinks "the people who will respond to graffiti, demographics show, will probably vote for Obama over McCain." more ›
