Beautiful lawns, flowering bushes, and planters with lush greenery: This morning, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden announced the winners in its 13th annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest. The residential first place winner was MacDonough Street between Stuyvesant and Lewis Avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant (pictured above) while first place for a business/commercial block was Hoyt Street between Atlantic Avenue & State Street in Boerum Hill (pictured below).

The New York Times has one of those stories today that exemplifies the friction that occurs in a transitioning neighborhood, but with a twist that involves a group of residents who would be there against their will. In this particular case, it's about how neighbors feel about the proposed re-opening of Brooklyn's House of Detention on Atlantic Ave. and Boerum Place.
Yesterday, a chilling crime unfolded in front of 17 State Street in the Financial District. Karen Allende of the Bronx was on her way to work at 6:30AM when a man stabbed her repeatedly. A security guard initially thought she had slipped on the wet sidewalk, but then saw the blood; a construction worker, one of five people who tried to help Allende, said, "There was too much blood." Cameras caught the murderer approaching Allende from behind, and witnesses say he said something, then stabbed her multiple times. It is the first murder in Lower Manhattan (Wall Street and Tribeca) in two years.

THEATER: Though some might balk at an outdoor performance in this muggy, thunderstormy weather, The Drilling CompaNY's version of As You Like It, the next installment of Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot (directed by Jesse Ontiveros), is bound to exude enough cool to counteract the waves of heat rising from the asphalt. Newsday visits the Brooklyn Heights townhouse the city is selling at auction in a few weeks. Newsday even has a video tour of the former residence of the city's school chancellors, and it looks pretty nice, even though the kitchens (two!) and bathrooms could stand to be remodeled.
