The 9 year-old boy who perished in a house fire on Staten Island late Sunday apparently died while trying to save his pets. Tommy Monahan apparently had been with his mother as they tried to escape the fire, but he raced back to his room for his dog, lizard and fish. A 12-year-old neighbor told the Daily News, "Everybody thought he was outside but he wasn't.

A fire late last night in the Staten Island neighborhood of Prince's Bay claimed the life of a nine-year-old boy. Thomas Monahan Jr., who was unable to escape the fire at 49 Princewood Ave. was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. at Staten Island University Hospital. The boy's father Thomas Monahan desperately attempted to save his son after he, his wife and his 8-year-old daughter escaped safely.

A long-running feud between a Bath Beach apartment building superintendent and a tenant turned violent yesterday morning. Tenant Alberto Sanchez allegedly wielded a knife at super Leoncio DeJesus, who then threw acid in Sanchez's face. The acid hit Sanchez's girlfriend, who was attempting to calm him down, as well. Sanchez had allegedly jabbed the knife towards the super, and a witness said he overheard Sanchez saying, "I am gonna kill him" yesterday morning. Another said,...

Last night, a Staten Island resident was critically injured when a 19-year-old driver hit him on Mosel Avenue (it's the Staten Island incident on the newsmap). The SI Advance says that the driver, Leon Wilson, had been fleeing undercover police when he crushed 47-year-old Juan-Han Guan with the car. A source says that Wilson was driving around 100mph at one point. Guan's bike was described as being "embedded in the hood of Wilson's car, the frame contorted and the front tire and handlebars broken off."

A woman in her car at the park and ride in Pleasant Plains, near the Outerbridge Crossing, was shot in the head. The victim, 58 year old Jeanne Kane of Great Kills, was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, where she died.

A sad incident occurred on Friday night. A 2 year old boy playing with matches started a fire in his family's Brooklyn apartment. His mother, 40 year old Sandra Stephens, was killed and five others, including 2 year old son Kyle Stephens, were injured. The Post reports that Kyle was "known to play with matches" and he set a mattress on fire. His mother threw the mattress into the hallway, which then trapped her and her family, as well as another family they shared the apartment with, inside. From the NY Times:

Neighbors spoke of a horrific scene as firefighters rushed in: children’s screams for help, singed bodies and fast-moving flames.

A NJ family was driving along the Staten Island Expressway when their minivan crashed into a tree off the side of the road. Highway police were able to save three young children, ages 2, 3, and 9, but could not save their parents, as the front of the minivan was "fully enguled in flames" according to one of the police officers in the Post. Arturo Lopez-Mendez and Christina Guardado of Elizabeth, NJ were killed in the crash, which occured around 4AM yesterday, but children David, Catherine (pictured) and Elizabeth were treated at Staten Island University Hospital for cuts and burns. A driver who witnessed the accident saw police up ahead and alerted them; the police were able to break through windows to retrieve the children. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Stray voltage shocks aren't only for the cold winter months! An 8 year old was shocked by a manhole in Staten Island. Briana Santa Maria and a friend had been playing in a sprinkler yesterday afternoon when Briana ran across the street in her bare feet, getting a sting from the manhole cover. A elevator repairman neighbor checked the spot with his meter and saw there was a current of 100 watts. Another neighbor told NY1 that there have been problems with electricity in the area, plus Con Ed had done work on a light near where the girl was shocked.

Yesterday, a 65 year old Staten Island woman slashed her neighbor's throat, claiming the neighbor had stabbed her cat in the eye. The irate Stephanie Lindboe refused to drop her 12-inch knife, even lunging at a police officer, so the cop shot and killed her. Her victim, 59 year old Linda Padula, is at Staten Island University Hospital in critical condition with various stab wounds. During the attack, another neighbor tried to intervene and help Padula, but then Lindboe tried to stab him as well; the NY Times has a more detailed description of the attack and shooting, which the NYPD says seems to be within department guidelines, and AM New York references the 1984 shooting of a 66 year old woman brandishing a butcher's knife when police tried to evict her. Neighbors say Lindboe's behavior was erratic, and it's unclear how Lindboe's cat, Dickey, ended up stabbed in the eye (did she stab him herself?). Dickey had infuriated Padula, with the super saying, "The cat had a bad habit of coming in and pissing on the rug [in the hallway]."

Ack - a mother and daughter were severely burned when trying to deep fry their Thanksgiving turkey. Elsa and daughter Nicole Roberts of Brooklyn were monitoring their turkey deep fry on their driveway when the oil splashed onto their hands and feet. They had second degree burns. Neighbors called the EMT and the mother and daughter were taken to Staten Island University Hospital's burn unit, where they were listed in stable condition. Police think that the pots may have been unstable or the turkey was too wet when dipped into the pot of oil. There must be a number of deep-frying turkey incidents each year, because as deep frying turkeys (you can get a fryer for a little more than $100) becomes more and more popular with its enticing efficiency (cooking time is a fraction of oven preparation time) and juiciness, people take it for granted how it's actually dangerous to have a vat of boiling oil to cook food in.
