Filmmaker Declines To Thank Critically-Injured Man Who Saved Him From Train Tracks

Jonathan Parisen, an independent filmmaker who was the first to make a dramatized film about 9/11, still hasn't thanked the Good Samaritan who is clinging to life after helping rescue him from the Staten Island railroad tracks early Sunday morning. According to witnesses, Parisen was drunk at the time, and there are conflicting accounts about how he got down there in the first place. But according to court papers obtained by the Staten Island Advance, Parisen told an MTA cop, "I jumped in the tracks. I thought it was funny." What a cut-up, that Parisen! The only way to top this gag would be to pee on the third rail. more ›

Good Samaritan Hit By Train Trying To Help Drunk Off Train Tracks, Drunk Guy OK

A Good Samaritan is in critical condition after getting hit by a Staten Island Railroad train while trying to help an inebriated man climb up out of the tracks early Sunday morning. Steven Santiago, 39, spotted the stupid drunk man on the tracks at New Dorp around 1:30 a.m. and decided his life was worth saving, so he climbed down to try to help. The intoxicated man had apparently gone down onto the tracks to retrieve his shoe, and then couldn't get back up. MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz tells the Staten Island Advance, "This good Samaritan apparently went down to assist him, and unfortunately was struck by a train." more ›

An 18-year-old Staten Island man was killed last night after he jumped in front of a Staten Island Railroad train at the Huguenot station. Police say his death was most likely suicide, but they had no details as to why the teen would want to take his own life. An unidentified woman at the scene reportedly shouted, “He’s dead! ... My baby! My baby! Who was he with? Where were his friends? They are supposed to take care of him!" more ›

Staten Island Train Goes Off the Rails in Tottenville

2008_12_SIrail.jpgA car at the end of a commuter rail almost tried to make the leap for New Jersey when a Staten Island Railway train derailed at the end of its line as it approached Arthur Kill in Tottenville. No one was injured and New York City Transit is still investigating the cause of what led to the train going through the "bumper block" after its 40-minute trip from the ferry terminal at around 6:30 a.m. yesterday morning. That investigation requires that the crew of the train must all undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing. Onlookers were surprised at just how close the train came to the narrow strip of water that separates the island from New Jersey. “Holy smokes, you have to be going pretty fast to go this far,” one commuter remarked to the Times. This was the first deraliment since last year for the Staten Island, which began running in 1860—over 40 years before the subway's arrival. more ›
