Federal Jobs Finally Here: Economic Stimulators, Mount Up!

All right, New Yorkers, you've heard about this so-called stimulus money for months. Now Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Paterson are letting you know it's time to grab...that...dough! One of the first projects funded by stimulus money got underway this week, building new retail space for much-needed restaurants and shops at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. And yesterday the big two in NY politics announced that stimulus money will fund 8,000 more summer jobs for teenagers than there were last year. Teens can apply at this website until May 15th for jobs at everywhere from small businesses to government agencies to Barnes & Noble. If kids need any convincing for more reason not to spend three months simply keying cars and finally going for extra bases on the sexual diamond, maybe they can find it in words from one electrician finding work for the first time in months at the Ferry Terminal. He told the News, "Personally, I'm just excited to be in a field that might actually benefit from the new ideas Obama is putting on the table."

Staten Island Homeless Removed From Ferry Terminal

The Staten Island Advance reports on the city's efforts to remove homeless people from the St. George Ferry Terminal. About 75 have been living at the terminal this winter, "Though police and city officials were reluctant to chase them into the bitter cold, their presence has become a security and public health issue, sources say, with the eruption of fights and complaints of public defecation."

Only 10% of Staten Island Ferry Fish Survived First Year

Oh no: The Staten Island Advance reports on some sad news about the beautiful fish tanks in the Staten Island Ferry's St. George Terminal: Apparently only 40 of the 400 tropical fish have survived since being introduced last year.

Over the past 12 months, most of the delicate fish have died; some became the lunch of aggressive tankmates, while others were stressed from people banging on the glass, aquarium experts said. Aquarists have said the fish were also stressed because the constant lighting in the bright terminal kept them from having a necessary restorative sleep cycle.

Police say the driver who hit two motorcyclists, killing one, in Lower Manhattan yesterday afternoon will be charged with driving while under the influence; WABC 7 says he was "believed to be on drugs."

2008_07_whitehallacc.jpgAccording to reports, an accident has left 1 dead and 2 injured outside the Staten Island Ferry terminal in Lower Manhattan. Per WCBS 2, "a sedan that lost control went over the divider and struck [a motorcycle] before coming to a stop" at the terminal. WABC 7 says the fatality was from a motorcycle; it's possible there were two motorcycles involved. And a witness said, "I heard a loud explosion. I saw a car on top of a motorcycle, and it was engulfed in flames." Whitehall and South Streets are currently shut down as police investigate.

A reported fish fatality in the Staten Island Ferry's newly installed $750,000 fish tanks has spurred a lively discussion about what could be happening to the scaly creatures on SILive's forums. One poster wrote the fish death (perhaps the second) was "possibly a princess parrot fish...By 7:30AM it hadn't become a meal yet, but some of his buddies were starting to show some [interest]."

Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro, and some young constituents, unveiled two new 10-ton fish tanks at the St. George ferry terminal. Molinaro said the tanks will liven up people's commutes; in July, he told the Advance, "It's very soothing because we live on an Island and it's very pleasant, so it fits perfectly."

The MTA has been making an effort to warn commuters to watch their step going up and down the subway stairs, but it’s not just because they care so much about your safety – it’s because they can be held liable for your nasty falls. A former doorman has been awarded $7.67 million in damages resulting from a spill he took on the stairs of a Bronx subway station back in 1998. In this case the cause of the tumble wasn’t haste but rather a nice slimy pile of pigeon droppings.

Citing the unsightly damage that pigeon poop does to the city, City Council Member Simcha Felder announced a bill proposal to fine people $1000 for feeding pigeons. Some of Felder's key remarks and findings: "Stop feeding pigeons!" "If people like pigeons... feed [them] in your house and let them crap all over the place in your living room." A pigeon creates about 25 pounds of poop annually. "[The pigeons] may go elsewhere. Let them...

Well, Gateway National Recreation Area is right in our neck of the woods, extending in three New York City boroughs and into northern New Jersey. It is a good place to start your quest for the perfect patch of sand and cooling waters.
